Pioneering Firm based in Denver to Track and Help Minimize Event’s Carbon Footprint as DNCC Plans Most Sustainably-Produced Democratic Convention in American History

DENVER – In a Convention first, the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) today selected Camco International Group, Inc. (Camco) as the Official Carbon Advisor for the 2008 Democratic National Convention, to be held August 25-28 in Denver. The move further bolstered Convention organizers’ efforts to design waste out by applying sustainable planning principles to every decision in the lead-up to the Convention.

To help minimize the four-day event’s overall impact on the environment, Camco will be working with the DNCC during the coming months to measure the Convention’s carbon footprint,  strengthen existing programs and make recommendations about how to minimize and/or offset the Convention’s carbon output.

“This 2008 Democratic National Convention will make history in so many ways – and our commitment to making this the ‘greenest’ Convention ever is no exception,” said Leah D. Daughtry, CEO of the DNCC. “Camco, a world-renowned pioneer in the sustainability field, will help us make good on that goal by turning climate change liabilities into environmental assets.”

As the Official Carbon Advisor, Camco will work with the DNCC to estimate the Convention's carbon footprint; quantify the greenhouse gas benefits of various environmental initiatives including waste reduction, energy efficiency and the use of alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles; and advise on opportunities to offset the remaining emissions produced from hosting the Convention.

“I am delighted that Camco will be working with the Democratic National Convention Committee to quantify and reduce the Convention’s impact on the climate and help to raise awareness of this urgent global issue,” said Sam Houston, Chief Executive Officer of Camco in North America. “This project is a prime example of how Camco is leading the way in helping North America’s emissions intensive industry and public sector develop and implement practical strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

To measure the event’s carbon footprint during Convention week, Camco will assess emissions associated with travel to and from the event, the provision of food at the Pepsi Center and the Colorado Convention Center and energy use and waste by delegates, members of the media, program participants and Convention staff.

“We are so pleased to add Camco to our list of official providers for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Camco is a formidable force in the carbon market and will be a tremendous asset to us in reaching our sustainability goals,” said Andrea Robinson, Director of Greening for the DNCC.

Camco has a 20-year history of working in sustainable energy and low carbon markets, with senior professionals operating across six locations in North America, including two offices in Colorado. Holding one of the world’s largest carbon portfolios, the company partners with organizations to identify, develop and manage projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as to assist with the procurement of carbon credits.

The selection of an Official Carbon Advisor marks the latest in a series of steps the DNCC has taken to ensure the 2008 Democratic National Convention is the most sustainably-produced Democratic Convention in American history. Since arriving in Denver, the DNCC chose an Energy Star office building for its headquarters; put its entire housing selection process online, saving an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 sheets of paper; hired the first ever Director of Greening for a Democratic Convention; required its Official Vehicle Provider to provide an entire fleet of fuel-efficient and alternative fuel vehicles; selected a transportation consultant who committed to offsetting its carbon footprint; and hired a construction manager that will use green building practices to prepare the Pepsi Center in Denver for the event.
