Reflecting back on the long primary season, the audience rallied tonight behind Senator Hillary Clinton. Giving a voice to those Americans who remain invisible to our current administration, Senator Clinton expressed her dedication to improving the lives of everyday people. While the crowd cheered loudly, Senator Clinton recounted people she met during her campaign -- people who struggle to get by in George Bush’s America.

Tonight, speaking on the 88th anniversary of women’s right to vote, Hillary proudly remembered the women who made her historic campaign possible. Also thanking her current “sisterhood of the traveling pant suits” for their support throughout her campaign, Hillary stressed her commitment to the Democratic Party and our soon to be nominee, Barack Obama.

And what did Hillary have to say about McCain? Simple: “no way, no how, no McCain.”

Monday Night, We Heard from Everyday Americans

Over the last few years, Barack Obama has joined with Americans in every state in this country in a positive campaign for change. The stories of the people he has met throughout this long campaign have inspired Barack Obama and helped to shape the policies he will promote as President. The speakers selected to be part of Monday's program came from across the nation, but they were all brought together through their personal stories, which address real life challenges. Monday night's program included:

Margie Perez (Watch the video)

Margie Perez, 43, has been a singer and songwriter for more than 15 years. Originally from Washington, DC, Margie moved to New Orleans in 2004 to pursue her music career. After her home was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina, Margie moved into a Habitat for Humanity home in the Musician's Village of New Orleans. Before his presidential campaign had begun, she met Senator Obama there as he toured the Village. She recalls how compassionate he was as he listened to survivors' stories and shared his thoughts about how best to move forward with relief and rebuilding efforts. Margie knows Senator Obama grasped the harrowing situation she and the other survivors had been through, and is convinced that Barack Obama will be a president that helps all Americans.

Mike and Cheryl Fischer (Watch the video)

Mike Fisher is an Amtrak technician and a member of the International Association of Machinists (IAM). His wife Cheryl is a technician at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, IN. After years of working hard to provide for their three children, the Fishers are facing the possibility of Mike being laid off from his job. In April, the Fishers hosted Barack and Michelle Obama in their home for lunch. Mike was particularly touched when Senator Obama told him he wanted to talk to him about his family's problems and concerns, not the presidential campaign. Mike believes an Obama presidency would advocate for hard-working Americans through promoting enhanced job security and strong family values. Mike and Cheryl have been married for 31 years and are the proud parents of three children -- Heather, 26, who is pursuing her Master's degree; Nick, 23, who works in security systems; and Abby Maddox, 19, who is expecting a child in October with her husband, soldier Nick Maddox.

Candi Schmieder (Watch this video)

Candi Schmieder, 39 years old, was born and raised in Southeast Iowa. She now resides in Marengo, Iowa, where she works part-time in the auto glass industry and serves on the Marengo City Council. Candi's long-held belief that politicians made politics more confusing and less helpful to average people was forever changed after she heard about Senator Barack Obama. The common sense ideas that Barack Obama put forward in The Audacity of Hope were very clear to Candi. He explained that bringing all kinds of people together to make real changes and improve lives without political games and bureaucracy was what really mattered. Candi was so inspired by Barack Obama's story that she signed up to be a precinct captain in Marengo during the Iowa primaries, a process that was completely new to her. For Candi, Barack Obama exemplified the belief that her voice mattered and that she could make things happen if she wanted. Her experience meeting and working for Barack Obama inspired her to go back to school to finish her bachelor's degree and pursue a newfound interest she now cares deeply about -- public service. Candi is married to Doug, and the two are the proud parents of daughter Riley, 11, and sons Jacob, 10, and Mitchell, 8.

Blogger Tailgate ‘08

Today, Governor Howard Dean took part in Blogger Tailgate ’08 to welcome bloggers to the 2008 Democratic National Convention. As Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Governor Dean recognizes the important role that blogs play in a Democratic victory this fall. This year there are more bloggers, with more access, than ever before. Hundreds of bloggers representing over 120 blogs will be covering the Convention from inside the Pepsi Center and INVESCO Field at Mile High.

Instead of a traditional event, we decided to take advantage of the Denver weather and mountainous backdrop with an outdoor tailgate in the Pepsi Center parking lot. Complete with pulled pork barbeque, hamburgers, and watermelon, bloggers had the chance to meet with Howard Dean and enjoy the Denver setting. Watch some clips from Blogger Tailgate ’08.

From the podium to the floor to the hallways and beyond, we’ll be bringing you all of the behind the scenes action right here on the DemConvention blog. Make sure you also check out our live HD streaming video to watch the latest speakers and events going on in the Pepsi Center.

The Convention opened this morning with a great performance from the Colorado Children’s Chorale. I ran into the whole group of kids as we were passing through security this morning and they were so excited to be performing on stage at the Convention. They let me know how hard they had been practicing -- “so so so much” -- and it was a nice treat for the entire audience.

Roaming throughout the arena today, we’ve met enthusiastic delegates and supporters – in some great outfits I might add (make sure to check out the photos.) We’ve heard from DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry, Governor Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, and Jesse Jackson, Jr. just finished addressing the audience. With one hour until the 2008 Democratic National Convention officially kicks off, the Pepsi Center crowd is slowly but steadily growing. One face in the crowd earlier today was Michelle Obama. She stopped by for a walkthrough of the podium, touring the Pepsi Center and taking her first look at the Convention’s incredible stage.

Outside the Pepsi Center, people are wandering around the various media pavilions and grabbing lunch from the vendors. Inside, people are getting situated and exploring the seemingly endless hallways. We’ll be giving you a detailed look inside every corner of the Pepsi Center, but for now take a look at the current scene as the Convention nears:

Each week, we’ve been providing an inside look at the Convention straight from the people putting the event together. Our final installment, also featured on the Huffington Post, is from DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry.

With the 2008 Convention just days away, the final pieces are coming together for this historic event. No one has put more time and energy into this year’s Convention than DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry, the tireless director leading Convention planning.

Starting this process almost two years ago, Leah has overseen the Convention’s many stages, from site selection to planning to the final execution. With the Convention just two days away, the unveiling of the Pepsi Center podium yesterday represented the culmination of months of work dedicated to one goal -- bringing more people into the Convention process.

Studio ’08: Bringing the Convention to Your Favorite Local News Teams

Do you have a favorite local news channel? Do you like to listen to local radio shows? If so, you should take a few minutes to learn more about Studio ’08 -- the DNCC’s effort to bring the story of this year’s Convention to local media outlets across the county.

While over 15,000 members of the media will descend upon Denver in the next few days, not everyone can make the trip out to Colorado. Our goal is to make sure that your local stations have top of the line access -- just like the major news networks.

After clearing away all of the hockey and basketball paraphernalia in the Pepsi Center gift shop – from the Denver Nuggets and Avalanche, of course -- Studio ’08 was assembled. During the Convention your local elected officials and party leaders will stop by this fully functioning studio to conduct interviews -- via satellite -- with your favorite local newscasters and radio hosts.

The interviews from Studio ’08 will provide a great opportunity to learn about what’s happening inside the Convention directly from the leaders you know best. But we don’t just want to you to hear about the action, we want you to have a first-hand look. Our crew will be roaming throughout the Pepsi Center to shoot video, take pictures, and record audio right from the Convention floor. You will have an inside look as your delegates and local leaders take on Denver.

The Convention is a time for Democrats from across America to unite for a common goal -- electing a Democrat as president in the fall. The Convention also serves as an opportunity for Barack Obama to present himself to the country and explain his vision for the future of our nation. The 2008 Convention isn’t about party insiders and elected officials. It’s about opening up the process to involve as many Americans as possible. It’s about the real people of our country who are facing so many challenges each and every day. And who better to discuss these concerns on stage at the Convention than Americans from across our country. This year, Americans from all walks of life will join party leaders and elected officials to discuss the real issue they struggle with everyday, such as rising energy costs and our faltering economy. With less than a week to go, preparations for the 2008 Democratic National Convention are moving ahead at full steam. Construction crews are nearing completion on many projects, from the media pavilions in the parking lots to the suites being renovated for television networks. You’ll have to wait until Friday for a look inside the Pepsi Center, but the stage has been built and the final details are being put in place. Read more about the final preparations here.

This year’s Convention will open with the first-ever interfaith gathering on Sunday, August 24. Faith will also play a role during the Convention -- the Faith Caucus will meet to discuss various topics “including how an Obama administration would engage people of faith.” Read more about the interfaith service here. On Thursday, ten people from across the country will join Barack Obama backstage to meet the Illinois Senator before he takes the stage at INVESCO Field at Mile High. One of the winners, Former Army Major John Volkmar, is from Colorado. Currently a graduate student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, John voted Republican in the last two elections but was instantly drawn to Obama’s message. Click here to read more.

On the last night of the Convention, Barack Obama will accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for president, becoming the first black presidential nominee from a major party. This momentous event falls on the same day as the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic “I have a dream” speech. The Best is Yet to Come…

Making the rounds in the Pepsi Center to finalize some logistics yesterday, I was definitely not prepared for what I was about to see. Welcoming some new staff, we toured the concourses and visited some of the media workspaces. But the best was yet to come…

The unassigned filing center is really taking shape. It still resembles a practice basketball court, but there are a few major differences. The hardwood floor has been covered up to protect the surface, and the court is filled with tables and TVs to accommodate members of the media. Power sockets and Internet connections are also being put in place so the press can file their stories. Adjacent to the basketball court, the Blogger Lounge is coming together with it’s own supply of tables, couches, TVs, and connectivity.

We made a few other stops to get our new team acquainted with the space, but the real surprise came when we peeked inside the “bowl” of the Pepsi Center. Prepare to be amazed! Our production team has a lot of experience with big events -- and it shows. They’ve done it all, from the Grammy’s to Super Bowl halftime shows.

Unfortunately I’m not allowed to give you any more details about the stage. You’ll just have to wait until our official unveiling on Friday! Even though I can’t give you an inside look inside at the Pepsi Center “bowl,” I won’t leave you empty-handed. Take a look at the transformation of the former Denver Nuggets practice court:

Home of the Democrats

Pepsi Center activity is heating up as more and more workers are added to the roster to put together what will be an unforgettable week. Everyone is hustling inside and outside -- at about every hour of the day -- to produce the final product that will be seen worldwide.

Trucks are unloading supplies at the Pepsi Center nonstop as they continue to deliver the materials needed to create the stage, podium, and other Convention structures. In the Pepsi Center, rigging, staging, lighting, and sound equipment cover the floor while cables, chains, lighting, and trussing hang from above.

Located in the spot where the courtside basketball seats used to be, the stage is nearing its final phase. On the opposite side, the center camera platform, known as the “cadillac,” is nearing completion. Painted a bright Democratic blue, the “cadillac” will accommodate the many producers, lighting directors, and cameras filming the Convention. Around the concourses, suites are still undergoing construction and customization in preparation for the broadcast studios.

As construction continues, the home of Nuggets basketball and Avalanche hockey is quickly becoming the home of the Democrats. Specific details on the set up will remain a secret until we unveil the stage and podium design and open our doors for a Community Open House on Friday, August 22. But watching it all come together, we can assure you that the Pepsi Center will be ready to impress.

The Construction Continues...

While we’re keeping a tight lid on sneak peeks at the construction of our stage and podium within the Pepsi Center, a lot of construction is taking place -- in full view -- outside of the facility. Nearing completion are the media pavilions -- the four giant tents spanning more than 150,000 square feet in the Pepsi Center parking lots. Last week, we focused on readying the tents for the media move-in. As the media start setting up their spaces at the Pepsi Center, they’ll be installing full-scale operations with all the amenities of a traditional office -- right inside the media pavilions.

This week will see our 45th media trailer arrive on the Pepsi Center premises, and media organizations are filling their various workspaces with carpet, furniture and the technology they’ll need to reach a worldwide audience in less than two weeks. In addition to the 92 media offices in the outside pavilions, networks will assemble five broadcast compounds in the Pepsi lots. Our construction team is also nearing the completion of a build out of 35 media suites. When the media arrives, we’ll be ready to greet them.

Highlighting the rise of the Democratic Party in the west, this year’s Convention will feature many prominent leaders from the Rocky Mountain region -- including Denver’s own Mayor John Hickenlooper and Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. Mayor Hickenlooper will speak on the first night, welcoming the nation -- and the world -- to Denver. Governor Ritter will make an appearance on Thursday night, speaking in front of over 75,000 people at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Read more about their participation in the Convention here.

As part of America’s Town Hall, yesterday the Convention team hit the streets in eight cities across the country to find out what questions voters want answered at this year’s Convention. Each night, party leaders and national experts will answer your questions live from the Convention floor. Read more about two of the “open calls” in Columbus and Detroit. Yesterday, Mark Warner was announced as the keynote speaker for the Democratic National Convention. The former Virginia governor has demonstrated his ability to work with both parties, and Warner’s ideals echo the Convention’s overarching theme of bringing Americans together. University of Richmond law professor Carl Tobias explains that "Warner is a very articulate, moderate business leader, who governed effectively and enjoys a broad coalition of support, including blue-collar white voters, African-Americans, labor and business people." After much anticipation, today the over 80,000 Coloradans who requested community credentials for Barack Obama’s historic speech on August 28 will find out if they received tickets. DNCC YouTube Contest Winner!

After hundreds of video entries and thousands of votes, we finally have a winner! Hailing from Iowa City, Iowa, Rich Peters’ video was the favorite video among our top five finalists.

The DNCC YouTube contest called upon voters to answer the question: “Why are you a Democrat in 2008?” Taking the question to heart, Rich discussed the issues he cares about most. Hitting on everything from the environment to health care to the war in Iraq, Rich knows that Democrats are better suited to address our nation’s greatest challenges.

This year more than ever, young people are getting involved to shape the future of our country. Take a few minutes to watch Rich’s winning video and learn why he is a Democrat in 2008.

As the winner, Rich is invited to attend the Convention and see his winning video played on the big screen in the Convention hall in front of thousands of delegates and elected officials. Rich will also have the opportunity to join Barack Obama’s traveling press pool for a day, documenting life on the campaign trail.

Mark Warner to Deliver Keynote Address

Today, the Obama campaign announced that former Virginia Governor Mark Warner will deliver the keynote address during the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, August 26. Adding to the great lineup assembled so far, Mark Warner’s vision and leadership style are truly in line with the themes of the Convention.

Across the board, people are impressed with Mark Warner’s ability to reach across the aisle and work with Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. Known for bringing people together, the former Virginia Governor’s career encompasses the Convention’s theme of Americans coming together for change.

One of Warner’s hometown papers, the Roanoke Times, explains his ability to broaden the Democratic base. Warner “was elected governor in 2001 partly by reaching beyond traditional Democratic constituencies and making inroads in rural areas. He forged working coalitions with Republicans who controlled the General Assembly and won support for a 2004 tax increase that he deemed essential to shoring up the state's finances.”

During the second night of the Convention, the focus will be on Renewing America’s Promise. A former businessman who jumpstarted Virginia’s economic growth as Governor, Mark Warner is well suited to address the growing needs and concerns of struggling Americans across the country.

Convention Themes Unveiled

People across this country continue to struggle and face tough challenges everyday – from the faltering economy and rising energy costs to the war in Iraq and the housing crisis. Across the country, Americans have made it clear that they want one thing: change.

This year, the Convention will ensure that these voices are heard. Each day of the Convention will bring with it a new theme – and a focus on a new set of American voices. From the voices of Americans who are calling for a new direction in the country to the voices who share Senator Obama’s concerns about the economy to those who share his vision of making America stronger and safer. Our Convention in Denver will highlight Americans coming together to change the course of this nation.

On a conference call this morning Kansas Governor and Convention Co-Chair Kathleen Sebelius explained that from “Monday through Thursday, our Convention program will highlight the people of this country who want positive change and who believe Barack Obama is the leader who will listen to their concerns and get our country moving in the right direction again.”

Convention News Roundup: August 11, 2008

Kicking off a week-long Convention programming roll-out, yesterday the DNCC and Obama for America announced this year’s headline speakers. Michelle Obama will lead off on Monday night, followed by Senator Hillary Clinton on Tuesday and Barack Obama’s vice presidential nominee on Wednesday. Read more about the headline speakers here.

In a show of hometown support, several newspapers highlighted their local DNCC YouTube contest finalist, urging readers to vote at www.youtube.com/demconvention. The Temple Daily Telegram featured Cathrin Winsor’s entry. In the video, Cathrin focuses on a young boy to emphasize issues important to young people -- "the failing economy, foreclosures and the war (in Iraq)." The Iowa City Press-Citizen featured Rich Peters’ submission. In his video, Rich argues that "Millions of us have stood up across America with a unified voice demanding one thing: change. I'm a Democrat because like so many of you, I love America. I want my county back."

In Pittsburgh this weekend, Democrats agreed on a party platform to present at the Democratic National Convention. Reflecting the vision of Barack Obama, the 51-page document includes Obama’s “call to draw down American forces in Iraq over 16 months” as well as an “energy plan that emphasizes less oil and more renewable energy sources.” The platform also “calls for a major change in direction for the government.” Read more about the party’s position on the issues here.

With hundreds of thoughtful submissions from around the country, we had some tough decisions to make. After much deliberation, today the DNCC announced the five finalists for the DemConvention YouTube contest, which asked participants: “Why are you a Democrat in 2008?”

There are so many reasons to be a Democrat in 2008, and the entries we received were truly compelling. The five finalists represent a cross section of America, coming from different regions and different backgrounds. Timothy is an Iraq War veteran from Michigan, Morgan is a first time voter from Georgia, Cathrin hails from Texas, Rich is a young voter from Iowa, and Brian comes to us from Ohio.

And now it’s your turn to pick a finalist. Visit www.youtube.com/demconvention between now and August 13 to watch the five videos and vote on your favorite submission. The creator of the winning video will travel to the Convention and see his or her video played before thousands of delegates, elected officials and other guests in the Convention hall. The winner will also join Senator Obama on the campaign trail for a day as a member of the traveling press corps.

Update: 80,000 Coloradans Request Credentials for Historic Event

Update: 80,000 Colorado residents have now requested credentials for Barack Obama's acceptance speech.

People from across the country have been clamoring for tickets ever since the plans were announced for the Convention’s fourth night location -- INVESCO Field at Mile High. Here in Colorado, just one day after the “Community Credentials” plan was announced, more than ~~60,000~~ 80,000 local residents have requested tickets through the Colorado Campaign for Change office to attend Barack Obama’s historic acceptance speech on August 28.

The people of Colorado have truly made this Convention possible. As part of the ticketing plan announced yesterday, more than half of the seats in the stadium will go to Colorado residents. Emphasizing the Democratic Party’s commitment to the rising Mountain West and Southwest, nearly two-thirds of the stadium’s seats will be filled with residents of these regions.

Because of the high demand for tickets -- exceeding community seating capacity – Coloradans wishing to attend the fourth night of the Convention will now be placed on a waiting list. Visit http://co.barackobama.com/invesco or stop by a Campaign for Change office to sign up.

Don’t worry -- people from every state also have the chance to attend the fourth night of the Convention. Local Businesses a Perfect Fit

From the beginning of the planning process, the Convention Committee knew that all of the drastic Pepsi Center renovations would need to be completed in less than two months. With time constraints like that, Convention planners knew there was only one place to turn. Who better to work on renovating one of Colorado’s biggest sports venues, than the local contractors that know it best?

And that’s where St. Andrew’s Construction Services came in. Based here in Colorado, St. Andrew’s is one of Colorado’s top minority-owned companies. As an electrical services provider, President Rusty Gonzales and his crew are one of the few contractors to have participated in the original construction of the Pepsi Center, INVESCO Field at Mile High, and Coors Field.

With all that experience, St. Andrews was a perfect fit. And so far, Rusty Gonzales and his team feel the same way. Listen in as Rusty discusses his latest venture at the Pepsi Center:

In the Blink of an Eye

Things are moving along quickly at the Pepsi Center. In the blink of an eye so much has changed. Walking through the arena today, some parts of the Pepsi Center were unrecognizable, taking new shape to accommodate the needs of the Democratic National Convention.

With just 21 days to go until the start of the Convention, the Pepsi Center renovation is in full swing. With various construction crews operating 20 hours a day, the Convention team is pushing it to the max as the final phase of the construction is underway.

Some brief highlights…

Inside the Pepsi Center, metal rigging has been installed to support more than 1,200 lights, audio speakers, video screens, and other features of the Convention hall. On one side of the arena the infrastructure for the stage and podium has been assembled, and on the opposite side the central media riser is taking shape.

At least 33 suites are in the process of being retrofitted and redesigned to meet the needs of the media. Miles and miles of cabling and dozens of power units and transformers have been installed along the concourses.

And that is just inside the Pepsi Center. Outside in the surrounding parking lots, all of the media pavilions have been fully erected with walls, overhead lighting, and plywood flooring. Until recently, the pavilions just consisted of metal frames.

To support the thousands of media operating in workspaces outside the arena, three cable bridges, 16 feet high, have been erected on the sides of the Pepsi Center – spanning above roadways. These bridges will connect miles of cabling from the arena to media pavilions and satellite trucks in the lots surrounding the building.

Although I am inclined to type away, detailing the many levels of construction, I think this transformation is best demonstrated through images.

Sneak Peek for Denver Residents

In a fitting location, DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper were on hand outside the arena to announce details of the Pepsi Center “Community Open House” for Denver-area residents.

Denver-area residents and students will take a first look inside the Pepsi Center on Friday, August 22, 2008. The DNCC’s neighbors will have a glimpse at the innovative Convention hall design before the tens of thousands of Convention guests arrive in Denver.

As hosts of this historic event, the Convention Committee wanted to open up the process to Denver residents, making the event as accessible as possible. Tickets for the “Community Open House” are available now on DemConvention.com -- click here for more information.

The open house is a great opportunity to be involved, and after seeing the changes in the Pepsi Center so far, Denver natives will definitely want check out the complete transformation of their hometown sports arena.

Taking Part in Volunteer Project, DNCC Interns Help Build Home for Injured Iraq War Veteran

Traveling to Golden, Colorado, interns from the DNCC took part in an ongoing volunteer project today, landscaping a home built for wounded Iraq War veteran Staff Sergeant Travis Strong and his family.The home is a joint project of the DNCC, Homes for Our Troops, America’s Credit Unions, and the National Journal Group, and construction began back in April (we’ve talked about this on the DemConvention blog before).

With the home nearing completion, DNCC interns and credit union volunteers spent the day turning the former construction site surrounding the house from a dirt lawn:

…into a lush green yard:

Volunteers got to work right away removing rocks, weeds, and debris around the house. After clearing the yard, the team hosed down the dirt, prepping it for sod. Next, the volunteers unloaded an enormous truckload of sod -- a quick way to convert a dirt patch into a beautiful lawn. After planting some trees and flowers, the transformation was complete.

Today’s venture was part of a year-long series of service projects organized by the DNCC to give back to the community. Since last July, “DNCC Service Days” have centered on issues of importantance to the Denver community: youth, environmental projects, and homelessness and hunger.

After today’s efforts, the entire volunteer team is eager to see the final result and provide a warm, welcoming home for Staff Sergeant Strong and his family. Click here to look at more photos from today's service project.

Inside the DNCC: Expanding the Convention’s Online Reach

Pepsi Center Progress Straight from the Construction Team

The transformation of the Pepsi Center is well underway, and it’s time to recognize some of the people making it happen – our hardworking construction teams. Today you’ll hear from Turner Construction Superintendent Jake Coykendall, who helps oversee much of the work done by our local construction crews.

From cabling to electrical services to tent construction, Colorado-based companies are taking part in every aspect of the Pepsi Center renovation. With just 26 days to go – construction progress is right on track and the team isn’t showing any sign of letting up.

Breaking Down Barriers, New Partnership Expands Reach of Spanish-Language Convention Coverage

Making the Democratic Convention accessible to as many people as possible has been a constant goal in Convention planning. And yesterday, with the help of Comcast and Entravision, further inroads were made in expanding national Spanish-language coverage of the four-day event.

Comcast has already partnered with the DNCC to provide online streaming of the Convention -- in Spanish -- at www.DemConvention.com, and they are offering additional Spanish-language content through Comcast’s Video-On-Demand service.

And now, adding even more to range to their coverage, Comcast will partner with Entravision to make its Spanish language simulcast available to television stations in 20 of the nation’s top 50 Hispanic markets and to a network of 48 owned and operated radio stations – an expansive broadcast reach over and above the online offering.

Convention News Roundup: July 29, 2008

After two hours of discussion, the group gathered at Stacey Crease’s home near City Park decided that the Democratic Party’s platform should include a focus on education. And this year, the Democratic Party is listening. With 1,400 such meetings taking place across the country, Stacey and her group took part in the party’s effort to open up the Convention process by inviting people to meet locally and submit their ideas to the national platform drafting committee. People across the country participated in this massive effort -- read more about the platform meetings here.

With 50,000 people converging upon Denver at the end of August, the Convention team has enlisted some help. Training is underway to prepare the more than 10,000 volunteers to welcome visitors to the Mile High City. Focusing on enthusiasm and accuracy in the current trainings, volunteers will be assigned specific roles in the coming weeks -- click here to learn more.

Construction at the Pepsi Center has been running smoothly largely because of the hardworking local labor unions involved in this massive project. To mark one month out, two Colorado tribes joined together to perform a Native American blessing at the Pepsi Center on Friday. The ceremony highlighted the rich traditions of the west, and the prayers recognized the meaningful work of the Democratic Party. Native American Blessing

With the start of the 2008 Convention just one month away, two Colorado tribes performed a Native American blessing at the Pepsi Center yesterday. Paying homage to the region’s rich Native American heritage, the Convention team was honored to take part in the ceremony led by members of the Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Indian tribes.

While the Convention seeks to engage people across the nation, it’s also important to step back and take in the unique setting of this year’s Convention -- Denver, Colorado. Although this Convention will prove to be historic for many reasons, here’s one more to add to the list – it’s been 100 years since Colorado last hosted a Democratic Convention.

That being said, taking part in this Native American blessing gave everyone the opportunity to take a deep breath, reflect on the region’s great traditions, and gear up for the 30-day sprint that lies ahead. The members of the tribes also spoke to the values of the Democratic Party and praised its commitment to being a voice for all Americans.

Reciting chants and prayers, the leaders of the Native American blessing burned sage as they moved around and through the Pepsi Center. As drums played in the background, they used feathers to spread the smoke around the place of blessing. Take a look at some photos from yesterday’s event:

Week Two By the Numbers (And a Special Visit from Governor Dean)

A few stats for week two of Construction at the Pepsi Center –

15,000: Members of the media expected at the Convention
600: Construction workers handling two shifts per day
120+: Blogs that will occupy the Blogger Lounge in the former Nuggets weight room
4: Pepsi Center suites completely “white boxed” (read more to find out what that means!)
3: Cable bridges, 16 feet high, to connect cables from the arena to the media pavilions and satellite trucks
2: Weeks of construction
1: fully erected media pavilion, complete with plywood flooring, a roof, and exterior walls

…And that’s just the beginning. Touring the Pepsi Center today, it was absolutely incredible to see the dramatic transformation that has happened in just two short weeks.

Starting in the Pepsi Center bowl, I stopped by as Governor Dean was giving a special thanks to a group of workers. Toiling around the clock, their hard work will ensure that construction in the sports arena stays on schedule. Making his way through the crowd, Gov. Dean learned about the different projects that everyone was working on, from tent construction to suite remodeling to cabling.

On a mission to track the construction progress, I didn’t need to go very far. Right inside the bowl, thousands of seats have been removed to make way for the stage. Even all of the railings have been completely detached.

In search of more renovations, I headed to the suites. Dozens of suites are being remodeled as broadcast studios, and first I peeked into an unaltered one to get a better sense of all the changes being made. (Although doing so made me want to sit back and enjoy a basketball game in style -- Nuggets versus my New York Knicks perhaps.)

Moving over to a “white boxed” suite I couldn’t believe it was the same room. At the request of each media outlet, the carpet is covered, drywall is put in place, and furniture, plexiglass barriers, kitchen appliances, and seating, removed to make use of all available space.

Next I stopped in the Denver Nuggets basketball practice court. The floor has been lined with a protective covering to prepare for the press briefing and media filing center that will be put in place, complete with desks, telephones and lots of Internet connections. The former weight room has also been completely gutted to make way for the Blogger Lounge, home to the over 120 credentialed blogs (a record number for a Convention).

Lastly, I ventured outside where more progress was standing right in front of me – the media pavilions. All four pavilions are completely framed by a metal infrastructure, and the largest pavilion is already fully erected. It has plywood flooring, a roof, and exterior walls -- not to mention the overhead lighting and cabling for telephone and Internet access. These media pavilions, which serve as makeshift workspaces for the 15,000 members of the media, will be fully functional and will even have air conditioning.

Thanks to the dedicated teams working tirelessly on the Pepsi Center construction, each time I visit -- although I try -- there are just too many changes to count. Take a look at the progress from week two of construction:

In a profile of DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry, the New York Times revealed that Leah’s deep conviction in her faith runs parallel to her passion for the success of the Democratic Party. Leah, who spends many Sundays as a Pentecostal preacher, has made it her mission to incorporate people of faith into the Democratic Party. Having been tasked with orchestrating the Convention in August, Leah is responsible for making sure that “everything runs right…that the millions watching the convention on TV are captivated and inspired by the four-day-long show.” But for Leah, leading the Convention as well as expanding the reach of the Democratic Party “is, as she sees it, her way of fulfilling a generations-old family covenant with God.”

Leah’s successful integration of faith into her work for the Democratic Party is also the subject of an Associated Press story. The increasing numbers of Democrats of faith, including Leah, are working to “hold together and grow their party by claiming ground on religion and values that Republicans have successfully mined for years.” For Leah, reconciling these two aspects of her life makes sense. She explained that “all Americans, all people, have values…For some of us, values come from faith. For others it comes from what your parents taught you, what your grandmother taught you on the porch in the summertime. These are values that make us Democrats. We all have them.”

The Rocky Mountain News sat down with Jenny Backus, a Senior Advisor to the Obama Campaign, who joined the Convention team in Denver to help coordinate the monumental fourth night at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Building on DNC Chairman Howard Dean’s visions of bringing down the walls of the Convention, Backus explained that the “story of this convention is the story of this campaign…Barack Obama is a great messenger but he himself said that it's not him, it's the millions of people who brought him here. And we're going to be looking for ways to highlight those people."

Continuing to open up the Convention process, the Democratic National Committee along with the Obama campaign is seeking input from people across the country to help shape the Democratic platform. In homes nationwide, people are meeting to discuss the issues most important to them – health care, the war in Iraq, energy and the environment. The local meetings will continue through July 27, and people can submit their notes to the Platform Drafting Committee. A Convention of Firsts

Democratic Conventions in Chicago in ’96, Los Angeles in 2000 and Boston in ’04. Olympic Games in Atlanta, Sydney and Salt Lake City. All stops on my road to Denver, where I currently manage operations for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Even with all that major event experience under my belt and all the times I’ve run similar drills, I’m amazed by all the firsts I’m witnessing this go around. The first interfaith gathering to kick off Convention week. The first time we’re bringing all our delegates together on the eve of the Convention – in this case to recognize the Gulf Coast recovery effort three years after Hurricane Katrina. It’s my first Convention in two great venues – allowing for a larger audience than ever before. It’s the first time that so much access will be given to the online community – the technology team is working diligently and creatively to open up the Convention in new ways. And it’s the first time that an African American candidate will accept the nomination for President of the United States.

And these are just a few of the firsts that still make it exciting to sit here in Denver for my fourth Convention -- and do this job. Working for the Democratic Party will always be a learning experience and I am extremely grateful for that opportunity.

As August 25th approaches, I’m constantly in awe of the team assembled to produce the largest Convention to date. We have the ideal mix here in Denver of experienced talent, local talent, and new talent -- this combined team has made planning run incredibly smoothly.

That’s why we didn’t skip a beat when -- 49 days from our opening gavel -- we announced a change of plans: one incredibly historic Convention, now in two great venues.

It’s no small undertaking. As the “operations guy,” I can say that with authority. I learned early in my career to be flexible. We modified our Convention plans to have the operations staff adopt an Olympics-like focus – where a team manages some 30 sites or more – dividing between the two Convention sites in Denver so that no one had to focus on both. This keeps our eyes on both prizes.

When discussing the move to INVESCO Field at Mile High, it’s important to note that the addition of this venue was only made possible because of the extensive planning that went into the 2008 Convention over the past year. We started planning for the Pepsi Center so far in advance -- six months ahead of any cycle prior -- that by the time INVESCO Field at Mile High was announced, we were just focused on refining the Pepsi Center plans.

At some point in the planning for every Convention, the candidates have various thoughts on how to be unique and try something different. Talk of multiple Convention venues is nothing new. But I am beyond excited that the Denver Convention team is in the position to implement a massive venue because we are so far ahead of schedule. If we weren’t ready, we could not have made the move.

Denver is a fantastic city, and in terms of operations, it is a logistical dream. The city of Denver provides a great layout for events, and it’s a relatively new city with a grid system in place. Now I love Boston. But as an older city not built on a grid, we faced many hurdles -- both literal and figurative -- as we attempted to map out transportation. I truly believe that after tackling Boston in 2004, anything is possible.

Here in Denver this August, a Convention for the people is possible. An African American candidate is possible. And it’s possible this just might be my best event to date.

Teaming up to lead Convention delegates in several community service projects, yesterday Michelle Obama and Colorado First Lady Jeannie Ritter were announced as the Co-Chairs of Delegate Service Day, to be held on August 27, 2008. The goal of this endeavor is to “get delegates out into the community working on service projects such as cleaning up parks, reading to children and working with programs that help military families.” Click here to learn more about Delegate Service Day.

While in Denver yesterday, Michelle Obama spoke about her husband’s decision to move the fourth night of the Convention to INVESCO Field at Mile High. Discussing how it echoes his commitment to inclusion, Michelle explained that the move “is very consistent with the campaign he's run - trying at every level in different ways to open this process up, to make people feel included and feel like they have access to the democratic process…” Read more about what Michelle Obama had to say during her stop in Denver here.

Even though Senator Obama’s acceptance speech is moving to INVESCO Field at Mile High – the additional site is closer to the Pepsi Center than you might think. Yesterday, the City of Denver released a transportation plan geared at accommodating the influx of people expected downtown during the Democratic National Convention. Planning to keep Denver open and accessible, Mayor John Hickenlooper explained that the city has “worked very hard to ensure that downtown residents and workers can get around and access their buildings with ease during the Democratic National Convention.” Read more about the city’s plans here.

Michelle Obama Visits Denver, Named Co-Chair of Delegate Service Day Along with Jeannie Ritter

In her first visit to Colorado since her husband clinched the nomination, Michelle Obama made a stop in Denver today and greeted representatives of the DNCC and leaders from Denver-area volunteer organizations who are coordinating Delegate Service Day on Wednesday, August 27. Today, the DNCC announced that Michelle Obama and Colorado First Lady Jeannie Ritter will co-chair the effort.

On Delegate Service Day, delegates from across the country will volunteer at dozens of community service projects in and around Denver, ranging from reading to children to park cleanup and tree care, to supporting projects that aid military families, an area of special focus for Michelle Obama. Delegates are strong leaders within our Party, and we hope their work in Denver will lead them to get involved in or recommit to service upon returning home to their communities and help to inspire millions more Americans to lives of service.

Today, the city of Denver announced its plan to ensure mobility and access during the week of the Convention. The city’s plan provides information on roadways, recommended routes, public transit services, residential and business access, and community outreach endeavors.

Touring the Pepsi Center yesterday, the Denver Post had a first-hand look at the transformation currently taking place inside the sports complex. Seats have been removed, a server room is being built, special racks line the hallways to support miles of cables, and the Avalanche hockey locker room has been transformed. Even with all of this activity, the Post reported “[the DNCC’s] construction and technology partners said Monday they are ahead of schedule in making upgrades to the Pepsi Center.”

The Rocky Mountain News also provides a play-by-play of the Pepsi Center’s current makeover, highlighting changes on the floor, in the stands, out front, behind the scenes, and outside. The DNCC is working hard to use all available space as efficiently as possible. Read more about the first phase of the Pepsi Center’s transformation here.

Giving back to Denver and the local community is an important part of the 2008 Convention. During several service days, members of the Convention staff will take part in community service projects focusing on “key areas identified by Denver city leaders: youth, homelessness and hunger, and making environmental improvements to the city.” The DNCC is also “coordinating a Delegate Service Day…the project will allow delegates and others attending the convention to thank, celebrate and contribute to the city of Denver.” Learn more about the various community service projects here.

One Week In

Are we on budget? Are we on track? Are we on time?

These are the questions that Travis Dredd, Deputy CEO of Inside the Hall Operations, asks the construction management team each morning at their daily 8 a.m. meeting inside the Pepsi Center. As the first week of construction comes to a close, Travis and the Denver-based construction management team can proudly answer: yes, yes, and yes!

Just 7 days after the keys of the Pepsi Center were handed over to the DNCC, remarkable alterations have already been made as the arena undergoes a complete transformation to host the Convention.

Embarking on a tour of the venue this morning with some local media -- hardhats on -- we hit several key areas of the Pepsi Center to see what changes have been made. Our first stop was in the Pepsi Center bowl, where Director of Technology Brook Colangelo discussed the progress of this year’s technology preparations, noting that the DNCC is several weeks ahead of schedule compared to the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

In the arena, current construction activities include the removal of approximately 5,000 seats to make room for the stage, podium and television cameras. To ensure that wireless phone communications will work seamlessly during the Convention, 70 AT&T employees were on hand with over 300 devices to test the 3G network. Their tests will help prepare the network for Convention-goers who are expected to transmit real-time information using phone calls, text messages, and mobile Web surfing.

Next we arrived at the data center, often described as the “nerve-center” of the Convention communication network. Last week, this was a storage area for sporting equipment. Here are some server room numbers to digest -- 20 servers will be housed here, 3,300 miles of fiber optics are in place, and 1000 telephone lines will support the 1500 people working in and around the Pepsi Center.

We took a quick detour in a hallway to learn about the cabling stanchions lining the entire Service Level. Stanchions are metal racks that will carry 70 miles of power, data, video, and audio cables to expand the technology infrastructure for the Convention’s staff, delegates and the media. But don’t worry about the massive amount of wires -- the DNCC plans to recycle and reuse all of the cabling used during the Convention.

Even as an Islanders fan, I was still excited to explore the Colorado Avalanche locker room, the future site of the speech rehearsal area. To my surprise the hockey team’s locker room had already been completely transformed – benches and furniture were removed, protective coverings have been placed over the cabinets and floors, and drywall was in place to help recreate the stage and podium for rehearsal purposes.

And lastly, we made our way outside to take a look at a media pavilion currently being built in one of the many parking lots. At 62,500 square feet, pavilion #2 is a massive structure that will become a second home for many members of the media during the Convention.

Precision Industrial Contractors, a Colorado-based unionized company has already constructed the metal frame of the pavilion and is also beginning the roofing work.

Just submit a short video here explaining why you are a Democrat in 2008, and YouTube users will vote on a winner once five finalists are selected. DemConWatch reports that this contest “comes with a kicker. The winner not only gets to go to the convention but they also get to travel with the Obama campaign for a day as a member of the press.”

With the last night of the Convention moving to INVESCO Field at Mile High, which can hold over 75,000 people, Democrats across Denver have been clamoring for tickets. The Denver Post noted that the DNCC is developing a “community credentials” program to ensure that local Coloradans have access to the massive event. Sign up here to be alerted when ticketing details are available.

The DNCC is committed to minimizing the carbon footprint of the Convention -- to help this effort, the DNCC has created the “Green Delegate Challenge.” Partnering with NativeEnergy, a company that has “become well-known in recent years for supporting American Indian, farmer-owned and community-based renewable energy projects,” delegations are encouraged to obtain their carbon offsets from a number of clean energy projects. Curious how the delegations are measuring up in the “Green Delegate Challenge?” Politicker reports that Nevada will send a completely green delegation, with carbon offsets obtained for all 43 members headed to the Convention. Sneak Preview of INVESCO Field at Mile High

Eager to get a glimpse of INVESCO Field at Mile High, the recently announced site for the fourth night of the Convention, I was able to join a few local media outlets today for a sneak peek at the sports complex.

DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry and Deputy CEOs Travis Dredd and Cameron Moody were on hand to walk the site with Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Denver City Councilwoman Judy Montero.

The DNCC is working closely with city officials, and Leah and the team discussed many aspects of the August 28th event including potential seating arrangements, entrances to the field, and staging concepts. With the help of various stadium seating maps, the team began laying the groundwork for the monumental finale to the Democratic Convention.

At the top of today’s agenda was the participation of Denver and Colorado residents. Our phones here at the DNCC have been ringing off the hook with requests for tickets. To ensure that Coloradans will have access to this historic event, the team chatted about the development of the “community credentials” program, which aims to make the fourth night of the Convention open to as many Colorado residents as possible. (Ticketing details aren’t available yet – but sign up here to be alerted with an e-mail when an announcement is made.)

As I stood on the manicured turf at Mile High -- tempted to strike my best Heisman pose -- I tried to picture the incredible scene that would be taking place here in a few weeks. As the center of attention for Convention-goers, the stage is a key focal point as construction begins in the Pepsi Center. What makes this stage so special? Continuing with DNCC’s greening efforts, the Rocky Mountain News reported that the stage will be built by “entertainment design company PRG, which was given a mandate to rent used materials, including sustainable woods, and to recycle all materials when the stage is torn down.” Read more details about the construction of the stage here .

Fried Green Convention

There's been lots of chatter as of late about fried foods at the Democratic National Convention. Will they be served? Can delegates eat them? For the definitive word, have a look at this letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal.

The idea that fried foods would be banned from this year’s Democratic National Convention left a bad taste in many mouths-ours included.

The Denver Host Committee’s effort to make the catered food at Convention-related events healthier is a notable cause-we could probably all benefit from adopting healthier eating habits. But to be clear, Democrats at the Pepsi Center can have all the fried goodies they’re used to finding at any American ballpark or sports arena-fish and chips, chicken tenders, French fries. No one will face a plate of beets and asparagus unless they’ve ordered it. And by the way, at the Democratic National Convention, we also enjoy apple pie, weekend barbecues and catching a Colorado Rockies game-where we can’t keep away from the fried mini-donuts.

Media Walkthrough

With the keys to the Pepsi Center officially in the hands of the DNCC, members of the media walked through the arena today. This media visit offered a glimpse at preparations for the rapidly approaching Convention.

DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry was on hand to greet the visitors, sharing her excitement about the recently announced move to INVESCO Field at Mile High on the fourth night of the Convention. With the ability to hold more than 75,000 people, the additional site caters to the unprecedented enthusiasm for Senator Obama and the Democratic Party.

Obama campaign representative Jenny Backus echoed Leah’s sentiments – introducing a larger facility that will truly showcase Senator Obama’s vision of bringing more people into the Convention experience.

Director of Media Logistics Theo LeCompte and Deputy CEO of Public Affairs Jenni Engebretsen discussed technical features of both facilities and held a Q&A session to address the needs of specific media organizations.

Following the opening session, participants broke into smaller groups for a guided tour of the Pepsi Center. Convention construction began just yesterday. This morning’s media visitors skirted past work zones as they walked through the concourse, stopping for views of INVESCO Field at Mile High and the future media pavilion sites.

For the tour, I joined a group that included bloggers and other media outlets. We visited the Denver Nuggets’ practice basketball court and weight room -- the future site of a media workspace and the Convention’s “Blogger Lounge.” Our tour for bloggers concluded with a smaller Q&A on a variety of topics.

The informative walkthrough emphasized the DNCC’s efforts to ensure that all media involved will have the access they need to best introduce the Democratic nominee.

In a conference call for reporters today, the DNCC announced that Senator Barack Obama will accept the Democratic nomination for President of the United States before a crowd of more than 75,000 people at Denver’s INVESCO Field at Mile High on Thursday, August 28 -- the final night of the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Statement From DNC Chairman Dean And Convention CEO Daughtry On New York Times Sunday Story

We are proud to stand at the helm of the finest Convention team we’ve known. As the arm of the national Party tasked with planning and organizing the Democratic National Convention in Denver, the Democratic National Convention Committee has been at this for more than a year. And we take great pride in our work. That's why we were astonished to read in Sunday’s New York Times such a gross misrepresentation of the groundwork that has been laid to date.

The New York Times asserts that this is a Democratic convention effort “marred by costly setbacks.” That is false. In fact we are ahead of the game. Anyone who has ever worked on a national political Convention would tell you as much. This is a well managed Convention.

The New York Times states that the Convention is facing “upwardly spiraling costs on key contracts still being negotiated.” That is false. All major contracts have been executed and we are on track to move in to the Pepsi Center to begin build out on Monday as planned.

The New York Times implies that the Convention has imposed eating restrictions on delegates to the Convention. That is false. Democrats at the Pepsi Center and other official Convention venues can have all the fried goodies they can stomach. Talk of anything to the contrary is just plain silly.

The New York Times reports that Democrats are $6 million over budget in Convention planning and have failed to estimate costs properly. That is false. From day one, prudent budgeting and financial management have been an important part of our Convention planning – across the board.

The New York Times states that “overly ambitious environmental goals” from Convention organizers have backfired, citing a lack of interest from delegates in the effort. That is false. In fact, hundreds of delegates have already signed on to the “Green Delegate Challenge,” and we anticipate recently selected delegates to join in the weeks ahead.

Despite uninformed criticism in the New York Times and the city’s worries about the color and fried nature of food among other things, our focus remains on putting on an historic event that helps keep Senator Barack Obama on a path to victory in November. When August comes, the eyes of the world will be watching. And we’ll be ready.

DNCC Launches "Convention Captains" Program to Involve Coloradans across the State

The DNCC launched a “Convention Captains” program today, inviting community activists statewide to lead an outreach effort to engage more people than ever before in the 2008 Democratic National Convention experience. Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. and Kansas Governor and Convention Co-Chair Kathleen Sebelius joined DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry for a press conference announcing the program. Each Convention Captain will be issued a “playbook” arming them to serve as a local ambassador for the four-day event and providing them with helpful tips for planning and hosting a successful watch party, community service activity and other events to engage their community in the Convention.

Today, the DNCC announced that the 2008 Democratic National Convention will be simulcast live, gavel-to-gavel in Spanish on DemConvention.com – a first for a national political convention.

It’s all part of our effort to make this year’s Convention as inclusive and accessible as possible. You can see all the action here at DemConvention.com – from your own home, in your own language.

“With Spanish as the primary language of approximately 35 million Americans – not to mention the more than 300 million Spanish-speakers outside the United States – offering bilingual coverage of the Convention makes more people feel welcome under the Democratic Party’s ‘big tent’,” said Texas State Senator and Convention Co-Chair Leticia Van de Putte. “As a Texan and a Latina, I’m proud to belong to a party that embraces the Hispanic community.”

Comcast Corporation is making the bilingual coverage possible and has also been named the Convention’s Official Cable Television and Video-On-Demand (VOD) provider. In that role, Comcast will place highlights, including key speeches and Spanish-language content, on its national VOD platform. Volunteering for one of our greatest volunteers

We’re happy to say that the plot of land we stood on months ago in Golden, Colo. has now been transformed into a new home for disabled Iraq veteran SSG Travis Strong and his family. DNCC staff joined local credit unions, the Colorado Building Trades Council and the National Journal Group in the Homes for our Troops Build Brigade this weekend -- a truly remarkable project. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, what started on Friday as a concrete building base became a fully-built weather-proof house by Sunday. Also visiting the site and Strong family over the weekend were DNCC CEO Leah D. Daughtry, Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien, Congressman and Senatorial candidate Mark Udall and Congressman Ed Perlmutter. A High School Student with an Idea: Offset Carbon Emissions for All

Taylor Bates, a recent high school graduate from Williston, Vermont, knew the competition to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention would be tough. With nearly 200 people competing for 23 delegate and four alternate spots in the Vermont delegation, Taylor had to be creative with his platform.

That’s when the idea came: He could campaign on the platform to offset carbon emissions for every Vermont delegate, as part of the DNCC’s “Green Delegate Challenge.”

It was a tough sell at first. Vermont Democrats were skeptical: How could an 18-year old raise more than $200 to offset the carbon emissions for all of the 27 delegates and alternates? With a little help from his skills as a champion in extemporaneous speaking, Bates managed to convince his fellow state Dems to elect him to be an Obama at-large delegate – the youngest member of the Vermont delegation.

Thanks to Bates’ determination, Vermont also became the second state in the U.S. to offset the carbon emissions created from the full delegation’s travel to the Convention.

So, how will he raise the money?

“I want to have a community auction for friends and family with Democrat and Convention memorabilia and maybe even an autograph or two from a famous party leader,” said Bates. “Senator Obama’s signature sure would be nice.”

A Message for our Nation's Youth: "Get in the Way"

We're often asked what's planned for young people around our Convention in Denver. From the Party's Youth Council meetings at the Colorado Convention Center to the College Democrats of America Convention in Denver the weekend before our opening gavel to opportunities for our Write to Lead youth essay contest winners, we have a lot in store for young people from Denver and across the country.

But in a twist, one enthusiastic 16-year-old spoke for his peers and asked DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry at a recent community forum: "what can we do for you?" Her response: Get in the way. Change, after all, doesn't happen on the sidelines. Watch the video below for the full exchange.

"The woman behind Democrats' 'values'"

Check out this feature on DNCC CEO Leah D. Daughtry from politico.com:

‘Everybody’s got values,” said Leah Daughtry.

That includes Democrats as well as Republicans, according to Daughtry, who, on the phone from Denver, speaks in the smooth alto and full sentences of a practiced orator.

The poli-sci-major-turned-Pentecostal-preacher describes herself as “a pastor, a preacher, a person of faith.” She doesn’t mention that she’s a political powerhouse who has made the V-word her party’s new mantra — first as chief of staff for the Democratic National Committee and now as CEO of the Democratic convention in August.

In 2005, Daughtry created the Faith in Action Initiative to “ensure that there is ongoing, authentic outreach to communities of faith,” she said. The seven-member group meets regularly to map out the left’s new strategy on religion, which doesn’t involve ignoring it. The New York Times called her “the quiet architect.”

The Denver forums conclude the series - "Convention Conversations: A Traveling Forum Sponsored by the DNCC" – which launched in September and has logged more than 3,500 miles and visited eight different cities throughout the Rocky Mountain West in recent months. After visiting eight cities in the Rocky Mountain West during the past ten months as part of our series of “Convention Conversations” community forums , we’re coming back to the place where it all began in September— our host city of Denver -- to close out the series. These back-to-back community forums on the afternoon of June 10th and the evening of June 11th will be an opportunity for Denver residents and business owners to ask questions directly to our Convention CEO Leah Daughtry and other members of our senior management team just under three months before the opening gavel.

For the first time, we will also provide an overview of several official Convention activities and events open to the Denver community during Convention week in August. We were treated today to a warm welcome in Grand Junction, where we held our eighth in a series of Convention Conversations community forums for residents of Mesa County.

State Rep. Bernie Buescher served as our gracious host at Mesa State College, making a strong case for Convention attendees to make their way "over to the good side of the mountain" during either the weekend before or after the Convention - or both! With some 200 lakes on the top of the Mesa and the red-rock Colorado National Monument, the natural beauty in and around Grand Junction is certainly a compelling draw. Short of that, he said he hoped at least a couple hundred cases of Palisade Peaches make their way to Denver for Convention week.

On the topic of Colorado businesses getting involved in the Convention, our CEO Leah Daughtry suggested that some of the well regarded wineries on the Western Slope explore partnership opportunities with catering companies serving the host of events in and around Denver during Convention week. As one attendee commented after the event, "We don't just sorta do wine here."

Meet Jared Jolton

Last week we announced the two Presidential winners of our “Write to Lead” essay contest, which encouraged Colorado students to voice their thoughts on leadership and the future of our country. We previously introduced Mari Tanabe, a junior at Manitou Springs High School who wrote the essay “Restless for Change.” Now we’d like to introduce our other Presidential Winner, Jared Jolton, an 8th grade student at Colorado Academy, who wrote the essay entitled “In Front of the Pack.” Watch the video below to see Jared accept his award and read a portion of his essay. Q&A With Mari Tanabe

We recently sat down with one of our “Write to Lead ” Presidential Winners, Mari Tanabe, an 11th grade student from Manitou Springs High School in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Mari tells us below where she got the inspiration for her essay and what it’s like to be a winner with “presidential” stature.

Q: What went through your mind when you heard the news that you won the essay contest?

A: I was pretty shocked when I heard that I won the essay contest. I got a phone call right after school in the parking lot. Everything seemed a little unreal, and I didn’t realize what an amazing experience I was being presented with until after I hung up the phone.

Your essay is entitled, “Restless for Change,” how did you think of that topic?

My essay was inspired by my history and leadership classes. About every other day, someone brings in a current event. This is an article about anything related to American History or leadership, and we have discussed everything from the war in Iraq to the death penalty. When I hear about all the hardships in the world, it reminds me of how lucky I am. The issues we discuss also make me restless for change. I find it hard to sit still when I hear about the problems and the debates the world is experiencing. I almost always voice my opinion in these discussions, because I am ready to be heard. In the midst of the upcoming election, the nation is experiencing a great turning point. The issues can no longer be addressed the way they have been in the past. Our nation demands change to attend to the growing problems in the world. I know our future leaders will harness the people’s energy for change and use it to better the world.

What was your inspiration for entering the contest?

The essay started out as an extra credit project in my history and leadership classes. However, when I actually started writing the essay, I realized it was worth a lot more than a couple of points in history. I often fret over the problems from the past. I cringe when I read about events like the atomic bombs and the Holocaust in history. I am helpless to change what has happened in the past, but I have every power to change what happens in the future. I am on this earth, here and now, with the ability and voice to make a difference in the lives of others. A huge inspiration for my essay was the genocide conference I attended in Denver. One workshop I took was on the history of genocide. I have no power to stop the previous genocides that have already occurred, but I have the power to stop the current genocide in Darfur. This is the kind of change I am hoping for, and this is the change that inspired my essay. I am encouraged by the thought that every individual can do something to change the future for the better. Finally, my history and leadership teacher, Ms. O’Connor, was an inspiration for my essay. Her constant care and compassion for the world around her serves as an inspiration for the kind of person I want to be.

What is the thing you are you most excited to see or do when you’re at the Democratic National Convention?

I am most excited to be a part of such a big change at the Democratic National Convention. I feel like I will be a part of history. My dream at the Democratic National Convention would be to meet the candidate, but I am also looking forward to meeting all the state delegates and having the opportunity to hear about what they do and what they have in mind for the nation. I have never been to anything like this, so I am just excited for the experience.

What was it like to accept your award in front of all of your classmates—let alone an entire school assembly?

Most people will tell you that I am a pretty shy person. To accept the award in front of my whole school along with several video cameras was pretty scary. I expressed concern to my sister as I was sitting in the bleachers waiting for my name to be called that I was worried I might trip. Little things like that were running through my mind as I anxiously waited. It was certainly an exhilarating experience to have so many people cheering for me, but I also learned an important lesson: I don’t think I can ever become a celebrity or a movie star. One day of attention was plenty.

Do people stop you in the school hallway now that you’re such a celebrity at school?

I have received many nice compliments as I walk down the halls. Since Manitou is so small, news travels fast. Several teachers have jokingly asked for my autograph, and quite a few people told me that they saw me on the news. I am trying to keep my humility throughout the experience, but the momentary spotlight has been fun.

Earlier today, I had the honor of appearing on ‘Pastors and Ministries of the Week,’ a radio show on KLDC-AM 1220, one of Denver’s leading gospel radio stations. As a fifth generation pastor and new, but proud resident of Denver, I’m always happy to update local communities of faith on our planning and progress. I tune in online to KLDC-AM every now and then, so it was a treat to be in the studio today and see where it all happens. My friend, Leon Owens, hosted the show. We had a great time catching up and talking about some of the faith initiatives we’re working on for Convention week. For the first time ever, we will open the Convention with an interfaith gathering open to the public on Sunday, August 24 in Denver. We’ll announce speakers for the event and more details in the next few weeks, so stay tuned. In addition, we’re hard at work planning our first-ever ‘People of Faith’ caucus to meet regularly during Convention week and discuss issues of importance to faith communities around the country. We’re making great strides this year and I invite you all to keep watching – and listening – as we announce more.

Kristi King was selected in May, 2008 to design the 2008 Democratic National Convention credentials. We recently had the chance to sit down with this local Colorado woman to ask a few questions about what it’s like to design such an historic item. Read her responses below.

How long have you lived in Denver?: I am a native of Colorado. I have lived in the Denver metro area since 1974.
When designing something of this magnitude, where do you draw inspiration from?: The most important initial inspiration comes from the client. I met with the DNCC a couple of times before I really had a grasp on the importance of the credentials. From a designer view point, we want the final product to be a knock out, but with a project of this magnitude and with this much historical importance, I had to take into account how to make all the elements work. After that, the inspiration was a piece of cake, Denver's 150th Anniversary, the 100 years since Denver hosted the Democratic National Convention and Denver today. I wanted the city of Denver past and present to be the main focus from the get-go.
You will be the brains behind the hottest must-have item at the Convention. How does it feel to know that so many people will be wearing your designs around their necks Convention week?: Well, I am a total fashionista. And if the credentials are the "must-have" limited edition DNC accessory, I'm really good with that.
How did you get your start as a graphic designer?: I attended art school here in Denver - Colorado Institute of Art with an Associates degree in fashion illustration. The fashion industry isn't exactly a wide open field here in Colorado. And I could not imagine living anywhere else... so I started working here at Denver's alternative newspaper: Westword then with a local publishing firm specializing in tourism publications: Weaver Publications. Then I just decided to go out on my own and that was over 15 years ago. No regrets. I have a dream job.
Do people in Denver ever stop you on the street now that you’re such a celebrity? Honestly, do family and friends treat you differently now that you’re holding the creative brain-power behind one of the most coveted items at the Convention?: Hmmm.... I don't think so. Not at all. I've actually had to explain to a lot of people what the credentials actually are. That's a funny question that would make my family & friends laugh.
Other than the Convention, what is the most fun and creative project you’ve designed something for?: Two answers tied for first: My Dia de los Muertos inspired wedding invitation and my annual Christmas cards that feature my BFF scotty dog Tiny Elvis. He's the personality behind the scenes.
We heard a rumor that your Mom cried out of happiness when she read the press release announcing your position as the credentials designers. True or false?: True, she's my biggest fan. But keep in mind she gets choked up when she watches PetSmart or Hallmark commercials.

Announcing the State Blogger Corps

Months ago, we began the process of credentialing bloggers who cover state and local politics, as part of the DemConvention State Blogger Corps. More than 400 blogs applied for the program. And they’re incredible. Some blogs are the work of dedicated groups of activists, a few are full-time professional endeavors, and many others are the products of busy individuals blogging about local politics in their free time. Those selected to be part of our State Blogger Corps were announced today. And in every case, these bloggers have become experts on the political happenings in their states.

You’ll see a list below of the 55 blogs that will comprise the State Blogger Corps. They’ll be seated with their respective delegations at the Convention. These bloggers will have some of the best seats in the house and they’ll be the eyes and ears of local audiences online around the country. DNC Chairman Howard Dean recorded a message to introduce the program – so I’ll let him explain the rest.

Meet Ricky Kirshner and Mark Squier, the former a veteran of major entertainment productions – like Super Bowl half-time shows and the Rose Parade – and every Democratic Convention since 1996, the latter a Party adviser brought on to spearhead the strategic communications behind the program.

They made their debut on this blog last fall, but they’re back in today’s edition of the Rocky Mountain News.

Both are hard at work preparing an engaging, interactive four-day event that will put our nominee on the path to victory in November. For example, design plans for the stage and podium were finished in February, in anticipation of construction that will begin the week of July 7^th and convert the Pepsi Center from sports arena to Convention hall.

And while production plans are kept tightly under wraps, Kirshner and Squier say the Convention won’t be. They want the four-day event to be as interactive as possible. "We're looking for ways to bring down the walls," Kirshner said.

Walleye to the Rescue (Mission)

Today we were happy to see our delivery of walleye arrive from the Republican National Convention folks. If you haven’t been following our friendly wager, the delicious Minnesota fish was our prize after the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Minnesota Wild in the NHL Western Conference Semi-Finals. Instead of enjoying the fish ourselves, we decided to donate the walleye to the Denver Rescue Mission, a set of local homeless shelters. DNCC staff member Marisa McAuliffe, who was featured on our blog last fall for her extensive volunteer work at the Mission, shuttled the frozen fish over to their Lawrence Street facility, which provides 200 beds and free meals for Denver’s homeless. We’re not sure when it will be cooked, but it’s sure to be a treat. This recipe caught our eye shortly after the Avalanche victory over the Wild, so it’s definitely our recommendation for the Mission.

Thanks to our friends in Minneapolis and to the Avs for winning!

Colorado Springs Residents, Businesses Look Forward to Democratic National Convention

At a community forum last night in Colorado Springs, local residents and business people turned out to hear from Convention organizers about the historic regional opportunities presented by Denver’s hosting of the Convention.

“Given the level of interest in this Convention, we’re expecting a larger turnout than previously anticipated. That means cities and towns beyond Denver have even more opportunities to benefit,” said DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry. “And since Labor Day weekend immediately follows the Convention, many Convention-goers will be looking to places like Colorado Springs to get some R&R.”

The event was the seventh in a series of ten community forums – “Convention Conversations: A Traveling Forum Sponsored by the DNCC” – which launched in Denver in September and has traveled to Pueblo, Boulder and Lakewood, Colorado; Las Vegas and Salt Lake City in recent months.

Trees, Trees and more Trees for Denver’s Sunnyside UPDATE

Rounding out a week of activities around Earth Day, many of our staff will don T-shirts and old jeans and get their hands dirty Saturday morning at a tree planting in Northwest Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood. The planting of 400 trees will increase the tree canopy in one of Denver’s most underserved and least shady neighborhoods.

Our participation in the project is part of “DNCC Service Days,” an effort to give back to the community that has been such a gracious host, and reflects our commitment to making this year’s Democratic Convention the most environmentally-sustainable event of its kind.

The project is part of the Mile High Million, Mayor John Hickenlooper’s initiative to plant more than 1 million trees in metro Denver over the next 19 years. In a bit of a warm–up exercise, some of my colleagues participated yesterday in another city-sponsored tree planting on Auraria Parkway, not far from the Pepsi Center, home of our 2008 Convention. You can check out our work – and perhaps catch a bit of shade – when you arrive here in August.

Calling All Walleye Connoisseurs... Your Recipes, Please!

While we eagerly await that “special package” from our friends at the 2008 Republican National Convention (following our friendly wager and the recent triumph of the Colorado Avalanche over the Minnesota Wild in the NHL Western Conference Quarter-Finals), we just can't stop thinking about how to best prepare what's sure to be a wonderful meal. As we get ready to cook up the walleye, which will be coming our way any day now, we want your ideas too. The following dish sounds like a keeper. If you’re a walleye connoisseur, lend us a hand and post your recipe recommendation here!

Deep Fried Fish

In a large skillet, place about 1/2" of vegetable oil in skillet.
Turn flame to medium.
Pull skin off the fillets.
Cut fillets crossways into 3-4" chunks.

Take pieces and put into medium size bowl filled with water and 2 teaspoons of salt.
Soak for about 1/2 hour.

To make the breading you will need 1 cup of bisquick, 1cup of instant mashed potato flakes, and 1/2 cup of frying magic.
Pour these items into a one gallon ziploc bag and shake well.
(you can substitute Frying Magic with Italian bread crumbs)

In a small bowl, wisk 2 eggs with a splash of milk.
Take the walleye pieces and place in egg wash (make sure they are covered on both sides). Then place them into bag with the breading mixture.
Seal bag and shake until pieces are thouroughly covered.

Place fish pieces into skillet for about 2-3 minutes per side.

To check, take a spatula and cut into middle of fish. They should be white and flaky. Cooking time may vary depending on the thickness and size of the pieces. Place the pieces on a plate covered with paper towels or napkins to absorb the excess oil . Salt and pepper to taste. (I like a little lemon juice squeezed on just before serving) Enjoy!

After hitting the road and heading to Salt Lake City, Utah earlier this month, the DNCC’s traveling community forum series is back in Colorado. On Tuesday, April 29th at 5:30 pm MT at the Antlers Hilton in Colorado Springs, DNCC CEO Leah D. Daughtry and Colorado State Senator John Morse (invited) will provide local residents and business people with the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and find out how they can take advantage of the historic regional opportunities presented by Denver’s hosting of the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

The series - "Convention Conversations: A Traveling Forum Sponsored by the DNCC" - launched in September and has traveled throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West in recent months, with stops in Denver, Boulder, Pueblo and Lakewood, Colo.; Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.

Wild About Walleye

In what could only be interpreted as foreshadowing of things to come, the Colorado Avalanche triumphed over the Minnesota Wild at the Pepsi Center Saturday night to win the Western Conference Quarter-Finals. Before the series began, we made a friendly wager with our counterparts at the Republican National Convention Committee in Minneapolis-St. Paul on the outcome of the series, offering up Colorado steak to their Minnesota walleye.

A bet is a bet, and we’ll be eagerly checking our mailroom in anticipation of the arrival of that walleye.

And while we’ve enjoyed the friendly competition with Wild fans over the last couple of weeks, we certainly hope to find them on our team when the spotlight returns to the Pepsi Center in August. We welcome Avs fans and Wild fans – and many others – to stand together as we put our Democratic nominee on the road to the White House in November.

A Win Worthy of a Must-See Video

We’ve made a friendly wager with our counterparts at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul on the outcome of the NHL playoff series between the Colorado Avalanche and the Minnesota Wild. With tonight’s victory by the Avs, the series is now tied at 2-2 after back-to-back games at the Pepsi Center here in Denver.

So we took our camera across town - right into the heart of the action - to find out what Avs fans think of the wager and this summer’s Convention. Check out the video below for a great look at the local excitement - and some promising tips on cooking walleye.

"A Labor of Love" Begins in Golden, Colo.

In February we posted about the great Homes for our Troops project that we have undertaken with the Republican National Convention, the Credit Union National Association and the National Journal Group. In the months leading up to the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, staff in both Colorado and Minnesota will work to build a house in each Convention host city for severely wounded American troops.

We are now happy to say that we have come one step closer to providing a specially adapted home to Staff Sergeant (SSG) Travis Strong and his family here in Colorado. On a plot of land in the town of Golden, representatives of the partner organizations, including our own CEO, Leah Daughtry, broke ground with the Strong family during a late-winter Colorado storm yesterday morning. Despite the cold, there was tremendous excitement in the small tent filled with media, organization members and family supporters.

As part of our DNCC Service Days initiative, our Convention staff is now eager to get involved with the construction of the Strong family household. As Leah said at yesterday’s event, “We’re looking forward to hammering some nails, hanging some dry wall and laying some sod, as this will be a labor of love for a true American hero.”

A number of my colleagues are rubbing their sleepy eyes today after staying up late last night to see the end of the Colorado Avalanche’s overtime win against the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. How could we sleep with so much on the line!?

But we’ll take the hint from the Rocky Mountain News and try to keep our bragging in check. This is a friendly competition after all. Congratulations to the Avs on their nail-biter of a win. If the first game of the series was any indication of things to come, we’ll soon be enjoying some fresh walleye from the lakes of Minnesota here in Denver.

The DNCC launched its Green Delegate Challenge today -- a new initiative to encourage friendly competition among the states and offer special rewards for the delegation or delegations that demonstrate the highest level of commitment to offsetting their carbon footprint from attending the Convention in Denver.

And speaking of competition (or lack thereof), watch this video for more on our selection of carbon offset projects for this challenge. Through Native Energy, the DNCC is supporting the Wray School District Wind Turbine in the Democratic National Convention's home state of Colorado and the Focus the Nation Wind Turbine on a family farm in....well, you'll just have to watch and see....

Serving Up a Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity in Greeley

“Thank you. I haven’t had a meal that good in a long time.” That’s what Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien told students in a culinary class at Greeley’s Northridge High School on Friday. O’Brien got a taste of the students’ unique talents while promoting student participation in “Write to Lead,” a youth essay contest organized by the Democratic National Convention Committee, Post-News Educational Services and Qwest Communications.

The up-and-coming chefs prepared and served a lunch worthy of five stars, while fellow students from a government class and the student council dined with the Lt. Governor and discussed the challenges and opportunities for leadership that Northridge provides them. O’Brien shared details of another opportunity – “Write to Lead” – and encouraged the students to submit their essays before the April 18^th deadline and not miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime history-making event taking place right in their own backyard.

Open to Colorado cmiddle and high school students, the contest offers a unique opportunity for Colorado youth to voice their thoughts on leadership and the future of our country and to engage in the 2008 Democratic National Convention experience. Two students will be named as Presidential Winners and receive credentials to attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver, while finalists will serve as ambassadors to state delegations across the country.

A Different View of the Rockies

It was just the greeting we had come to hear: "Welcome to the Rocky Mountains - the new frontier for the Democratic Party," said Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker this morning from the stage at Memorial House, site of our sixth "Convention Conversations" forum. After DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry opened with an invitation for Salt Lake residents to participate in this historic Convention - through any number of avenues - Mayor Becker talked about the leadership that Democratic officials are offering at the federal, state and local levels across the region. He said he looked forward to the arrival of Democrats to Salt Lake's "sister city" of Denver and talked about the West's unique sense of place -- not felt in other parts of the country. After a series of thoughtful questions covering topics from the role of youth in the Convention to how we'll showcase leaders of the West and bring in others through technology to the best way to defeat "Senator 100 Years in Iraq," Mayor Becker presented Leah with a book on Salt Lake City and closed with some friendly words of city rivalry. "Be sure to remind your friends in Denver that once they're done there, they can come see a REAL mountain city." We'll do that, Mayor -- although no chance we're taking sides in this one. And thanks again for hosting us today!

Helping Deliver the Goods with Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver

Number eight in the DNCC “Service Days” series brought Convention staff to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver’s administrative offices earlier today. In a warehouse with towers of boxes filled with donations from the Boys and Girls Clubs’ corporate partners, DNCC staff sorted and shelved the items in preparation for their distribution to children across the city. From backpacks to clothing to sporting equipment, volunteers organized the gifts in order to help make the process of moving everything from the warehouse to children’s hands as quick as possible. Additionally, volunteers broke down the boxes used to store the donations and packed a large truck full of cardboard to be recycled.

Boys and Girls Clubs are located throughout Denver, and for $2 per year, provide a fun and safe environment for kids when they need it most – after school and during the summer. Thanks to Kim and Burt at the Metro Denver administrative offices for all of their help with this great event.

DNCC Service Days are monthly projects that focus in one of three areas: youth, greening and the combined issues of homelessness and hunger. To see our previous posts on service events, click here.

Convention Executive Producers Say TV Networks Are Tuning In

In a conference call with reporters yesterday, Ricky Kirshner and Mark Squier, Executive Producers for the Convention, said heightened voter enthusiasm this election cycle has translated into higher ratings for debates and election night coverage. And the television networks are taking note.

"If you check the ratings for the debates on CNN, MSNBC and Fox, it's been through the roof, it's been unprecedented," Kirshner said. "So, clearly the major networks see the excitement, and they want to cover the convention this year."

Kirschner and Squier promised to “tear down the walls” of the Pepsi Center and offer a more interactive Convention experience for TV and online viewers.

Lt. Gov. Encourages Young Women In Colorado Springs To ‘Write To Lead’

At a forum with young women leaders from Colorado Springs, Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien continued her statewide swing today to promote student participation in the “Write to Lead” youth essay contest.

O’Brien met with female students from Carmel Middle School enrolled in the InterCept program, an initiative of the Women’s Resource Agency designed to empower young women to develop leadership and mentoring skills, work toward a positive future and make healthy life choices. O’Brien shared her thoughts on leadership and our country’s future and answered a number of dynamic questions from the young audience.

“What have you sacrificed?” asked one student. The Lt. Governor reflected on the loss of her personal life and anonymity, and spoke of answering questions from constituents when recognized in public, even in the produce aisle at the grocery store.

“What’s your biggest accomplishment?” another student asked. O’Brien described a program to help struggling four-year-olds catch up with their peers so they’re prepared to start school. She’s proud of her efforts to convince colleagues of the need to fund the program.

O’Brien talked about how she never planned to run for public office. Her passion has always been education and health care policy. Governor Ritter recognized her work and asked her to join his ticket.

This led to her advice for the future leaders in the room. “You have to be responsible for your own actions first. If you work hard at your job and improve your skills, people will begin to look to you for answers. Then when the time comes, you’ll be able to choose what you want to do.”

At the conclusion of the event, the Lt. Governor signed autographs and posed for pictures with the students.

Week in Review: March 14, 2008

While the Convention may seem a long way off, there’s a lot going on at the DNCC as we lay the groundwork for the historic event that will put our nominee on a path to victory in November. With all the focus on the primary race, you may have missed some of the news the Convention in Denver is making. Check out just a few of the stories from this week.

The NY Times reports on the role of faith at the 2008 Convention – previewing not one but two “firsts” offered up by our own Leah Daughtry.

The Rocky Mountain News posted video from the first in a series of online packages chronicling the community service efforts of individual DNCC staff members in Denver. First up: Shyanne Robinson of the DNCC’s housing department interviewed after a painting project at Manual High School.

The Boulder Daily Camera and the Rocky Mountain News both direct readers to the new “Green Pages” on DemConvention.com, which highlight efforts to design waste out of the 2008 Convention while providing green educational tools to users.

The DNCC also hosted a reception Wednesday for local artists displaying their works at the Convention headquarters in Denver. Some artists approached the DNCC with offers to help brighten up the bare office walls, and the word spread through the local art community. The Convention office is now displaying works from nine Colorado artists: Andy Baird, Jean Brodie, Mark Brodie, Greg Evans, John Fielder, Stacy Lewis, Dave Ryan, Jared Steinberg and Amy Thornton. Walk a Day in Daughtry’s Shoes

In Summit County, Colo., Students 'Write to Lead'

Students at Summit High School in the snowy, mountain town of Frisco, Colorado received a special visit today from Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien -- the first stop in a statewide swing to promote student participation in “Write to Lead,” a unique opportunity for Colorado youth to become involved in the 2008 Democratic National Convention experience.

O’Brien reminded students that they have opportunities every day to be leaders -- whether in the classroom, in competitive sports, or in other extracurricular activities. She challenged Summit students to take on positive leadership roles. “Leaders – good and bad – have a big impact on people’s lives,” she said.

The “Write to Lead” essay contest is organized by the Democratic National Convention Committee, Post-News Educational Services and Qwest Communications and invites Colorado middle and high school students to submit an essay on leadership and the future of our country. Two students will be named as Presidential Winners and have the opportunity to attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver, while finalists will serve as ambassadors to state delegations across the country.

“Many former presidents and other leaders were inspired by meeting a president they admired in person at an early age. President Clinton often recalls the day he met President Kennedy,” O’Brien said. “Who knows? Maybe you could have the opportunity to attend the Convention and even meet the next president of the United States. And that could inspire you to pursue a leadership role.”

'Convention Conversations' with Excited Lakewood Dems

At our fifth community forum, DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry joined U.S. Congressman Ed Perlmutter, Lakewood Mayor Bob Murphy and a great crowd of local Democrats and business owners in Lakewood, Colorado. The speakers discussed the opportunities for economic benefit that the City of Lakewood faces in the run up to and during the 2008 Democratic National Convention and also outlined the many ways that Lakewood residents can become involved. The forum took place in the new downtown Belmar area, a modern and attractive array of residences, restaurants and boutiques in Lakewood. Leah and Congressman Perlmutter discussed the opportunities for the city as a destination for delegates and other guests during the Convention. I just want to take the time to invite people to come out to the DNCC Convention Conversation on Monday in Lakewood. As the Representative from the 7th Congressional District, I want to encourage everyone to participate in this democratic process. The Convention will be a way for our community to be a part of history, and to share our values and history with the world. At the forum on Monday, we will talk about ways you can be involved with events surrounding the Convention, talk about the benefits to businesses and surrounding communities, learn more about who is going to be here and when they will be arriving, opportunities for students, and much more. We’ve posted a few times on the Write to Lead essay contest for Colorado youth, and it looks like you’ve been reading… and writing! The essays have already started coming in, and it’s great to see the big ideas that Colorado students have about leadership and the future of our country. Bipartisan Support Helps Build New Homes for War Veterans in Denver and Minneapolis

While me might seem like unlikely allies, we’re putting aside our differences and joining forces with our counterparts in St. Paul to build two new homes to support Homes for Our Troops, a non-profit organization committed to building specially adapted homes across the United States for severely wounded American troops.

In the months leading up to the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, staff in both Colorado and Minnesota will work with Homes for Our Troops, the Credit Union National Association and the National Journal Group to build a house in each Convention host city. The homes, uniquely outfitted for the special needs of these great Americans, will be presented to veterans around our respective Conventions.

The Denver home will go to Staff Sergeant (SSG) Travis Strong, his wife Misty, daughter Brianna and son Sean. Originally from California, Strong entered the Army after graduating from high school and has served for the past 11 years. During his second tour of duty in Iraq in November 2006, while on patrol as Vehicle Commander for Stryker Brigade 1-23, Travis lost both of his legs when an explosion rocked his platoon.

After about a year in Walter Reed Medical Center, Travis and his family moved to San Diego, CA, for his rehabilitation therapy in January 2007. Travis loves the outdoors and is determined to return to the activities he loved before his injury. Since returning from Iraq, he has spent time in Colorado learning how to mono-ski. Travis and his family are looking forward to moving in to their new home and taking advantage of their new life in the Rocky Mountain West – and we’re incredibly proud to lend a hand in making that possible.

DNCC Service Days at Clinica Tepeyac with Convention Co-Chair Van de Putte

In our seventh community service project in the Denver area, DNCC staff spent yesterday at Clinica Tepeyac, a community health center serving uninsured working families in Denver. Around 20 staffers crammed around a conference table piled high with files and compiled statistical information for the clinic. The paperwork needed to be prepared for the clinic’s application for State Primary Care Funds, which could provide Clinica Tepeyac with more than $400,000 in funding.

Joining us was Texas State Senator and Co-Chair of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Leticia Van de Putte. As a pharmacist for more than 28 years, Senator Van de Putte is a strong advocate for children, veterans, improved access to health care, quality education and economic development issues. The clinic’s executive director, David Lack showed Senator Van de Putte around Clinica Tepeyac, along with DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry and 9th district City Councilwoman Judy H. Montero. Hard Hats Required

This week we were proud to announce the DNCC’s construction management team. The Denver-based partnership of Alvarado-Turner-HOK will be in charge of transforming the Pepsi Center into the 2008 Democratic National Convention hall. The process will include designing and constructing the staging area for the Convention inside the Pepsi Center and then restoring the building as if we never stepped foot inside.

We’re also extremely proud of the fact that this minority and woman owned team will run the construction project with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Linda Alvarado, President of Alvarado Construction, will be our go-to throughout the construction process. She is no stranger to overcoming obstacles and achieving what others believe to be the heaviest of lifts – she has even made history as the first Hispanic American owner of a major league baseball franchise. Colorado’s own, of course!

The materials and methods used in building out the hall will also reflect sustainable building practices, helping to make this the greenest political convention in history. Plus, many of the materials that are disassembled after the Convention will be donated to community organizations.

Welcome to the new online home of the Democratic National Convention Committee. We've been working hard to put together a site that engages new communities, provides up-to-the-minute news, generates interest and fuels enthusiasm around this great Convention.

But this is only the beginning. In the coming months, we'll expand the site and offer even more resources for anyone interested in getting involved. During Convention week, www.demconvention.com will become a go-to resource for delegates, media and other Convention attendees as well as a place for Democrats and netroots activists all across the country to become part of the Denver experience. Colorado Students: Write to Lead!

Everyone we meet in Denver is so excited for the Democratic National Convention to come to town. For the younger people in the community, the Convention brings the chance to become involved in the democratic process, even for those too young to vote.

Such an opportunity became available yesterday, when the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) joined with Post-News Educational Services and Qwest Communications at East High School in Denver to unveil the “Write to Lead” youth essay contest and delegation ambassador program. Representatives from each of the partner organizations were joined by Sara Lass and Marlene Smith – two 11th grade student government leaders from East – for the big unveil.

The “Write to Lead” contest invites students in grades 6-11 across the state of Colorado to submit an original essay answering one of two questions in 300 to 500 words:

• Grades 6-8: What qualities make a great leader? How could one exhibit those traits in everyday life?

• Grades 9-11: Looking to the future, what do you see for our country? What qualities does a leader need to take our country forward?

The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 18, and the finalists will be announced the week of May 19, with names and hometowns of each student appearing on www.demconvention.com and in a full-page ad to run in either the Denver Post or the Rocky Mountain News. The finalists will also serve as ambassadors for Convention delegations throughout the summer – playing an integral role in helping us to introduce Convention attendees to the West. And ideally learning a bit about the key role delegates play in the democratic process along the way.

In addition, two Presidential Winners will be invited to attend the 2008 Convention in Denver, awarded a laptop computer to aid with future writing projects and have his or her essay published in the newspaper.

Meet Mordecai…the official donkey mascot of the 2008 Democratic National Convention

Last night, a group of us from the DNCC made our way out to the National Western Stock Show for the Draft Horse and Mule show, which included the Democratic National Convention donkey mascot contest (more on that in a bit).

The evening started out with races that pitted mule lead teams vs. horse lead teams. Drivers on a mule or horse led slay would race to see which team could complete a series of obstacles. The first team to complete the tasks (loading and offloading bales of hay, navigating cones and barrels) then cross the fish line would win. Believe it or not, the donkeys beat the horses a few times!

The next exhibition was the horse drawn carriage show. These magnificent horses would pull the sleek and beautiful carriages around the ring. There were about 10 teams entered, and the parade of horses was absolutely beautiful.

Later that evening, ten children who had entered their donkeys in the Democratic National Convention mascot contest paraded their animals before the entire arena of thousands plus some VIP judges, including Sen. Ken Salazar, former Colorado Governor Roy Romer and DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry. Of the ten donkeys entered in the contest, a donkey named Mordecai, lead by its 10-year-old handler Sophie Herzog, was declared the winner.

Leah’s Preview of the National Western Draft Horse and Mule Show

After much anticipation, a panel of judges will choose tomorrow the official donkey mascot for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Our own Leah Daughtry will join Senator Ken Salazar, Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture John Stulp, Elbra Wedgeworth of the Denver Convention Host Committee and National Western president and CEO Pat Grant to make the selection during the National Western Draft Horse and Mule Show.

In preparation for the big event, Daughtry shares her thoughts on marrying Western values with a traditional Democratic Party affair such as the Convention and the inside scoop on her trip to Sheplers to buy her first pair of cowboy boots (which are still being broken in). The DNCC and the National Western Stock Show Parade

Earlier this week, we posted here about our first experience and impressions of the annual parade in downtown Denver to open the National Western Stock Show. Now, we’re back with of the big event — a parade of longhorns marching down one of Denver's busiest streets followed by tractors, stage coaches and a menagerie of color and spirit.

“A visual manifestation of our West and our Western culture" is how National Western Stock Show President and CEO Patrick Grant described the parade. Meet the DNCC Team: Bruce Rodgers

Earlier this week, the DNCC announced the team that will help craft the overall look, sound and execution of the Convention program, including the stage and podium design for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. The team, made up of Bruce Rodgers, Lisa Geers, Bob Dickinson and Pat Baltzell, will work with Executive Producers Ricky Kirshner and Mark Squier to make look and feel of the Convention a most memorable event.

We had the opportunity to ask Bruce Rodgers, Convention Production Designer and creator of Tribe media a few questions about his personal history, his take on stage design, the Rocky Mountain West and the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Q: The first thing people will see when they walk into the Pepsi Center on August 25th will be the stage for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Not to put any pressure on you, but how DO you deal with that kind of pressure when developing a design?

A: Thanks! This is a good first question. For a few months now, my California studio and I have been working hard on the 2008 Democratic National Convention concept. We’re still in the early phases so the pressure is on to create something really special…And I know we are on to something great… But to answer your question: The pressure on this project is all about creating something that will inspire people visually and speak to people from all walks of life. I deal with this pressure by reminding myself where I come from, my family, my hometown, etc. – that I’m part of the audience of normal people that want a positive exciting outlook on life. Once we’re on site the pressure increases because of the mix of all the technology and architecture and the potential design changes and challenges, but it will all come together. This production team is made up of great live television and DNCC people.

Q: Speaking of pressure, any stories of 11th hour changes or surprises you’ll never forget?

A: Oh yeah! In live television and production there are always last minute changes and surprises…That’s the fun part of my job (and the hectic part)…

Last year’s Super Bowl halftime performance, starring Prince. Normally a halftime performance is already pressure packed — we’re allowed 5 minutes to set up the show, which takes 1,000 volunteers and 200 production staff members to pull it off — and then the actual performance is 12 minutes long. All in front of a live TV audience of 140 million worldwide. It’s our chance to pull off a great moment in TV music performance history.

But for us, and Prince, the pressure multiplied thanks to God’s gift of a huge rainstorm. I remember being there and waiting for our cue to start our set up. The huge set was broken into 20 large portable puzzle piece chunks all lined up like an abstract parade outside of the stadium. While we waited for the 2nd quarter to end, the volunteers and staff and 300 member marching band and 3,000 fans who would be allowed on the field were being pelted by the huge Florida rainstorm.

Not a single person in the production complained or doubted we could pull it off, and we were ready. It was exciting, nerve racking and daunting. What would the rain do to the lighting? Would the stage be too slippery? Would the sound work? Would the stadium audience brave the rains with us? Would the cameras work? Would the clouds allow us to get the blimp shot? Would the pyrotechnics work in the soaking rain?

Once we were allowed to set up, it was mayhem everywhere. We were losing power and lights. We lost camera connections. The sounds coming thru the walkie-talkies sounded like a scene from ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ and as we got closer to the start of the actual performance, the pressure mounted.

Hidden inside one of the set carts was the amazing Prince who would ride out onto the field hidden from the audience. His cart wasn’t completely waterproof, so I know it wasn’t the most comfortable ride, but once the show started and he stepped onto the electric lift to take him up to the stage surface, I saw a performance that will stand the test of time. The cameras and lights and pyro effects and stage all came together. It took a great artist and a great team to give this inspiring performance to the audience. It was very cool to be part of that experience.

Q: Presumably much of your work is done before a show begins. Are you usually on hand to watch? And if so, what’s going through your mind as you watch the public take it all in for the first time?

A: Luckily, with the great people I work with, our shows are fun and huge and exciting. In live TV and show production, there’s an energy that is unique. People who attend live shows and concerts and football games and events such as the Democratic National Convention bring an essence and vibe to the event. They are ready to group together to take part in the event. Anyone who has ever gathered as a large group, a school or church gathering, or a big ball game or concert knows the feelings that sweep across the room when everyone is in sync. When this happens and I’m in the arena or stadium or concert hall, I blend in and enjoy myself immensely. Feels good to add my part into the mix.

Q: Where did you grow up and what led you to this line of work?

A: I was born in Monahans, Texas and raised 30 miles north in the west Texas oilfield city of Odessa. I’m a 5th generation Texan and proud of it. My father worked in the oilfields driving trucks and my mother was a mom and housewife. My two brothers and I were raised with lots of creative freedom, and we always had music in our lives. We went to church and we had lots of fun being involved in community things. And being in west Texas, we were outdoors quite a bit where the weather and oil industry combine to make for very dramatic memories. All these things have contributed to the way I design and the career I found myself in. I eventually studied architecture and set design at Texas Tech University and then moved to Hollywood to find a career in film and TV. That was twenty years ago. Wow.

Q: You’re building the set for the Super Bowl halftime show again this year. Any previews on what it’s going to look like?

A: Rain is not an option this year because the stadium has a roof. Somehow the lack of rain means more pressure on us. I can’t show you sketches, but I’m allowed to tell you that it will be huge and inspiring. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is a great American band, and we have the same team as last year, so I think the audience will love what we’ve created.

Q: Will this be your first show in Denver?

A: I really love the feel of Denver, it’s a great city. This is my first time to do a Denver based project, although I’ve had tours such as Rascal Flatts and Dave Matthews Band perform in Denver.

Q: Is there anything about the West that inspires you?

A: Being from west Texas I’ve always been inspired by the people, who are larger than life. Texas isn’t the only state that is larger than life — Colorado, New Mexico and California are too. I think people from the West get their inspiration to do great things from each other and from nature. People help us learn and strive, and nature keeps us humble and hopeful.

Western Culture Alive in Denver

The West has a unique culture that has been passed down through the generations. Even though farmlands have given way to sprawling suburbs and exurbs, the West is still a place where traditions hold strong.

This week, the National Western Stock Show returns to Denver. It is tradition that on the Tuesday before the show begins, the residents of Denver are treated to a parade that begins with longhorns, followed by horses and carriages and lots and lots of pageantry. With Gov. Bill Ritter commanding a horse, the longhorns set out down 17th street.

Kept in check by a team of cowboys, the massive beasts were corralled in a small scale cattle drive — right through downtown Denver. I’ve never witnessed anything like this before, and this parade really taught me something about the West. Even though the city skyline may have changed over the years, talking with individuals along the parade route, there is still a cowboy culture that lives on.

When the 2008 Democratic National Convention begins in August, chances are there won’t be any longhorn parades, but throughout our planning of the Convention, we have learned about the West and what makes it so unique and so colorful. The idea of having the Convention in the West is to show that Democrats are committed to Western values. And events like the National Western Stock Show give the Democratic National Convention Committee the opportunity to experience firsthand one of the oldest and most celebrated traditions in Colorado and the West.

Las Vegas Conversations

Today, the Colorado Democratic Party sponsored its second annual Faith and Politics Conference at the Iliff School of Theology. I had the honor of delivering the opening keynote.

The topic was Engaged Spirituality, and I chose to share with the audience much of my personal path. For me, politics was the path by which I could bring concrete change to the community I call home. And it was in the Democratic Party that I found a mirror to my own values. I talked about the founding of the Faith In Action Initiative - my baby - which is not about helping elected officials quote scripture or go to church and clap on the beat but about encouraging them to talk about their values and what drove them to public service.

And I talked about the ways I’m bringing these principles to my work as CEO of the Democratic National Convention. A big part of that is our community service initiative. It has given us a rich sense of connection to the community - as well as a concrete way to demonstrate our Democratic values, with more than just words. But with action. Our efforts to green our Convention are another example. Our Party’s principles should be part of how we do business every day - from the selection of our office space and the procedures we put in place there to our hotel and transportation operations. That’s the best demonstration of our commitment to life change - every single day, not just when the cameras are rolling.

While south of town, we made a stop at Sheplers to shop for cowboy boots. The National Western Stock Show is upon us, and I wanted a pair to wear to the big event. National Western is offering a special class this year to choose an official donkey mascot for the Democratic Convention, and I’ll be on the panel of judges. I tried on a number of pairs and finally settled on a shiny chocolate brown, with light pink and tan stitching up top. I think I’m ready.

DNCC Service Days: Plaster, Paintbrushes and Posters at Manual High

Staff at the Democratic National Convention Committee put on our old jeans and our matching gray DNCC Service Days t-shirts today and headed over to Denver’s Manual High School to paint the teacher’s lounge and help students prepare posters for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Every month, the DNCC staff volunteers time on projects in one of three areas: youth, greening and the combined issues of homelessness and hunger. This month, the DNCC teamed up with the Colorado branch of Volunteers of America to lend a hand at Manual High School.

While in town for the Democratic National Committee’s Executive Committee meeting, DNC Chairman Governor Howard Dean joined the DNCC — even sporting a DNCC t-shirt of his own. Wasting no time, Gov. Dean was given a paint tray, a brush and climbed up a ladder to do some painting. Proving he was well qualified for the job, the Governor’s first question: "Is this paint latex or oil based?"

Manual opened in 1896 and has the distinction of being the alma mater of former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, his wife Wilma and former Denver Councilwoman and current Denver Host Committee President Elbra Wedgeworth, among others. In 2006, Manual closed its doors due to declining enrollment and low student performance, but has since reopened for 9th graders — with plans to add one grade each year until it is once again home to a full four grades.

Speaking on behalf of all my DNCC colleagues, hearing the story and history of Manual was inspiring. And having the opportunity to help make the school a better place for students and teachers was an amazing way to spend the afternoon.

Greetings from Las Vegas

Greetings from Las Vegas, where the sun is shining and the enthusiasm for our Party is running high. Ten days out from the early caucus in Nevada and 229 days out from the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, we took our "Convention Conversations" series to the Silver State. This was the first in our community forum series outside of Colorado.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was our gracious host as we gathered members of the community at the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 525. The first question out of the box: what are the dates of the Convention? A good reminder that our jump start in Convention planning is giving us a unique opportunity to get people thinking about and engaging in the Convention earlier than ever before. For folks in Nevada, that process starts with the caucus on January 19th - and runs through the Convention and all the way to election day.

Just as we’re seeing incredible enthusiasm in Denver and around the region — at these forums, in our service projects and for the Convention in general — we’re seeing incredible enthusiasm for our Party all across the country. Just look at the record turnout in our early voting states.

We came to Nevada to listen — bringing our videographers to record thoughts from attendees on what it means to them to have a Convention — and an early caucus — in the West. We want to know what the people in Nevada care about. And we want to share those thoughts and ideas with our nominee and our delegates. We want to map them into our Convention program. We heard from a number of folks today, and we’re taking all of it back with us to Denver — meaning not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Oh, and I would be remiss if I failed to note three very special guests in attendance today. The parents and aunt and uncle of our own Cameron Moody, Deputy CEO for Outside the Hall Operations, came out to show their support (and have the chance to get all the dirt on Cameron from his colleagues). Charles, Christella, Doby and Lorraine: it was wonderful to meet you!

A year ago, when Denver was in the running to become the host city for the 2008 Democratic National Convention, many said it was a long shot. But with hard work throughout the selection process, an amazing city and a compelling regional story to be told, this August 25-28th, Denver will host the first Democratic National Convention in the Mile High City in 100 years. Denver’s landing of the Convention was big news — perhaps the biggest of the year. As the year winds down, the Rocky Mountain News is asking readers to vote on the top 10 Colorado news stories of 2007. If you’re with us in thinking the Democratic National Convention coming to Denver should top the list, click here and cast your vote.

DNCC Service Days: Urban Peak

At the beginning of this week, DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry and the DNCC staff were joined by Colorado First Lady Jeannie Ritter for this months DNCC Service Days project at Denvers Urban Peak — a non-profit shelter and service provider for homeless youth. The DNCC and the First Lady prepared a hot breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and festive holiday sweet rolls for the youth at Urban Peak. Following the meal, Leah presented the organization with a box filled with clothes and other warm items such as gloves and hats donated by the DNCC staff for the cold weather months. Cousins, while eating crispy bacon smothered in maple syrup, proudly told her about getting an apartment and saving some money.Around the trio, video cameras rolled and the cafeteria at Urban Peak in Denver on Monday morning was filled with a cacophony of voices - troubled youth and those cooking breakfast for them in the kitchen on the other side of the counter. Among those cooking was Colorado’s first lady Jeannie Ritter and the staff of the DNCC.

Week in Review: DNCC Press Gallery update

This week marked the much-anticipated opening of the credentialing process for media interested in covering the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. While the bulk of media who will attend the Convention are credentialed through the U.S. Congressional Press Galleries, we do credential media — including bloggers — through the DNCC Press Gallery.

At the close of week one (drumroll please), we are happy to report 51 applications from bloggers already in — including State Blogger Corps applicants from 20 states such as: California, Colorado, Vermont, North Carolina and Kentucky. There’s plenty of time to ensure that no state is left behind on this unique Convention coverage opportunity. To apply for blogger credentials, click here. After weeks of planning and days of packing, the Democratic National Convention Committee moved from our temporary home in downtown Denver to our new home — seven floors down in the same building.

Our new office space gives us plenty of room to grow as our team expands in the months leading up to the Convention next August: 15,000 square feet with five conference rooms, each named after a state in the Rocky Mountain West. Watch this video for a first-person highlights tour of the office, including several of our “green" features. Caution: wet paint.

Hello from Durango this time. Continuing on the Pat and Sky tour of Colorado, Pat and I held a Convention Briefing and Delegate Training in Durango this past Sunday. We missed the snow on both sides of the visit by days so we had a clear blue sky for the flight, which of course was gorgeous.

Speaking of skies — the first thing I noticed when I got off the plane, was that the sky there was even bigger than it is in Denver. It’s a beautiful part of the state.Before heading over to the Durango Community Rec Center, Pat and I stopped for a quick breakfast (well, it was breakfast for me because I can eat huevos rancheros any time of day) at the Brickhouse Cafe. Very cute little place on Main Street.

I think we had our biggest crowd yet for this briefing — attendees from three counties. And of course once again a good mix of electeds, activists and folks just interested in hearing about the upcoming year. This time we had many more technical questions about the caucus process; a product I think of having more activists and precinct captains in the room. We also had a couple good suggestions for future Convention-related events around the state. All in all it was very productive and fun day. I even had time to do a little shopping on Main Street and take in a beautiful sunset before I headed back to Denver.

I had the pleasure of speaking at the Colorado Democratic Party’s annual gathering at the Renaissance Hotel in Stapleton this morning. There was a light snow on the ground but the winter weather didn’t keep any of our party faithfuls from coming out to hear from great Colorado leaders like Governor Ritter and state Chair Pat Waak.

We had a great group of folks in attendance and they gave me a very warm welcome. There was definitely a tangible sense of excitement in the room when the topic of the Convention came up. Once again, it was clear to me that this state is poised and ready to host the best Convention our country has ever seen. Folks were particularly interested in our citizen photo journalism project that aims to showcase the spirit of the West to the many visitors planning their trips here next summer. It’s an easy way for people outside of Denver to get involved in the Convention experience. So I hope you too will get out your digital camera and help us show the world the Rocky Mountain West as it turns a lovely shade of blue.

Convention Conversations - Boulder

This Wednesday, DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry visited Boulder, Colorado for the third in an ongoing series of Convention Conversations. Joining Daughtry on stage was Colorado House Majority Leader Alice Madden.

In addition to offering information on how Boulder residents and members of the local business community can get involved in the Convention experience, a good portion of the discussion focused on organizers’ efforts to “green” Convention planning. During the forum, Leah introduced Andrea Robinson, the first ever Director of Greening for a Democratic National Convention. Hello again. This is Sky Gallegos, Deputy CEO for Intergovernmental Affairs — back again with new video from our travels around the state of Colorado. A few weeks ago, Colorado Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak and I visited Steamboat.

This week, in the second in a series of our joint appearances, Pat and I visited Democratic activists in Ft. Collins to brief them on the Convention and how they can participate either as a volunteer or as a delegate.The excitement in the room was palpable, as we had 70 to 80 people attend on a brisk Monday night in early December.

Once again, we had a wide variety of participants with a full spectrum of political experience — everyone from a newly elected Loveland City Council member to a college student just dipping her toes into the political waters.

A Little taste of Denver in Vienna (VA)

I had the chance to introduce my new Governor, Colorado’s own Bill Ritter, to the DNC membership this afternoon. He gave a great speech that highlighted the lessons to be shared from the West and the pragmatic, forward-looking leaders of the region tackling big problems. And in Denver, he said, we will choose with one voice a leader who will move us forward as a country.

He also noted with pride that we’re working in Denver to put on the greenest Convention ever.

To close the day, the Host Committee held a reception for DNC members to offer them a little preview of next August. On the menu: Boulder Fries on the Fly, Rocky Mountain Buffalo Sliders, Tostadas and “Denveritas" to drink. Two big screens featuring local landmarks and landscapes and music including at least a song or two from The Fray.

Time to take my shoes off - it’s been quite a day.

Notes from the DNC Fall Meeting in Virginia

Greetings from Vienna, Virginia, where the Democratic National Committee is hosting its Fall Meeting. The DNCC team is here in force as well. We’re staffing a Convention Information Center today and tomorrow, offering a full slate of info on our host city and Convention planning to date to DNC members and other attendees from the Democratic family. We’re even offering Convention “credentials” to those who stop by - lovely souvenirs, although (before you get in your car and head over) they won’t get you into the Pepsi Center next August.

Over in Bloggers Alley, we have information on blogger credentialing in Denver. We also briefed state party chairs yesterday on our new DemConvention State Blogger Corps, and the plan was met with an enthusiastic response.

I also spent some time yesterday during the Faith In Action meeting discussing ideas for how we can bring the faith community into our Convention experience. Many inclusive ideas were put forth by the FIA members - a dialogue we’ll be continuing in the months ahead.

Later this afternoon, I’ll be introducing Colorado’s own Gov. Ritter when he speaks before the general session. I’ll check back in after that.

Q: What’s your job here?

A: I’m the Deputy CEO, Public Affairs for the Democratic National Convention Committee – which means I head up the press, online communications and public programs teams for the committee planning and organizing the convention in Denver.

Q: Any advice for your counterpart at the Republican National Convention?

A: There’s no question that the calendar ahead lends itself to heightened energy around the 2008 conventions. The back-to-back speeches offered from Denver and then St. Paul will be in essence the first debate between the nominees – a debate that will in turn kick off the home-stretch sprint to the election.

So with that in mind, I guess I’d say: Get ready. We intend to set the bar high.

DNCC Hotel Prize Patrol

During the week of August 25-28, more than 35,000 delegates, media and guests will descend upon Denver for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Where will they stay? The Democratic National Convention Committee has a block of 17,000 hotel rooms set aside. Delegations are traditionally the first group of Convention attendees to receive their housing assignments — and this was the big week.

While delegations across the country received their assignments online, DNCC Director of Housing, Tina Akintayo, rolled out the news to the 27 local hotels assigned to house delegations in a very unique way. Watch this video to see how Tina delivered the news around town.

DNCC Adventures in Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Hello all. This is Sky Gallegos, Deputy CEO for Intergovernmental Affairs, writing my inaugural blog post! This past weekend was the first in a series of “joint appearances" of Colorado Democratic Party State Chair Pat Waak and myself.

We are traveling the state to brief folks on the Convention (my part) and on how to be a delegate (Pat’s part). Our first outing was in Steamboat on Saturday, and it was great!

We had about 40 people show up, some hard-core activists and some people who just heard about it and were interested in learning more. I have to say, the variety of people in the room and the level of enthusiasm for 2008 echoes the interest and excitement we are seeing all over the state for this Convention.

Jenni Engebretsen (Deputy CEO for Public Affairs) accompanied me on the trip, and I think she was surprised by the Western laid-back approach to the whole thing. I have to admit that even I, the Colorado native, wasn’t so sure we were in the right place when we drove up to what matched the address we were given to find it to be next to a ski jump (complete with skiers, young and old, doing gravity defying jumps) and the strength training center. I think my favorite though, next to all of the wonderful food everyone brought for the pot luck portion, was when someone’s dog got loose and ran into our meeting during my talk.

Jenni and I shot some interviews of a couple of the local Democrats that were there. Check it out — I think it really represents the spectrum of Democrats one can find here in the West. Oh yeah, and check out our photos of the cattle drive (!) Jenni and I drove through on our way home! I will be back with more on our traveling series when we hit Fort Collins on December 3rd and Durango on December 9th.

This past Friday, Atlanta Mayor and Democratic National Convention Co- Chair Shirley Franklin visited Denver and participated in the DNCC Service Days campaign. Mayor Franklin and the DNCC staff sorted more than ~~2,500~~ 4,000 pounds of canned goods for the homeless and less fortunate at The Crossing, a facility of the Denver Rescue Mission.

The DNCC announced its blogger credentialing process for the 2008 Democratic National Convention — including an expanded blogger pool and the introduction of a brand new state blogger program. For just the highlights, below you’ll find the descriptions for the two different types of blogger credentials we’ll offer in 2008:

2008 DemConvention State Blogger Corps

Recognizing the growth of more localized blogs, this pool is designed for those covering state and local politics. To qualify as a state blogger, the applicant’s blog must have been in existence six months prior to requesting credentials and have at least 120 politically related blog posts. Bloggers must submit their daily audience and list their authority based on Technorati stats. Bloggers may also provide examples of posts that make their blog stand out as an effective online organizing tool and/or agent of change.

Once the state bloggers have been identified for the DemConvention State Blogger Corps, the applications of those not selected for this program will all be transferred for consideration for the general blogger pool.

General DemConvention Blogger Pool

This pool will consist of local, state and national political bloggers as well as niche bloggers whose main focus is not politics but who do write about politics or the issues around politics. The general blogger pool is also open to video bloggers in 2008.

Meet the Staff-Wally Podrazik

Hundreds of traditional and new media will descend tomorrow upon Denver for the first DNCC media walk-through in the lead-up to the 2008 Democratic National Convention. For many members of the media, this walk-through will serve as the first opportunity to see the Pepsi Center facility and to begin mapping coverage plans. For the ninth Convention running, it will be Wally Podrazik – with bullhorn in hand – leading the media though this first glimpse inside the home of the Democratic National Convention.

When Wally isn’t doing media logistics for the DNCC, he is busy writing books. In fact, he’s written ten books over the years, including “Watching TV: Six Decades of American Television” (a season by season story of TV). Wally, a Chicago native, also has written extensively on the greatest band of all time, The Beatles.

Before the media arrives, we decided it would be a good time to ask Wally some questions about his time with the Democratic Convention.

Q: We’ve got to ask: What drives you to keep coming back?
A: I love the role the convention plays in the process. This is the launching pad, the beginning of the final run to Election Day. And working with the media organizations is particularly satisfying. Every four years there have been leaps in technology that they’re eager to show off. More important, this is an event that brings out some of the best in journalists. Even as they gripe about preordained outcomes, they’re still here because THEY recognize this as an important event.

Q: You’ve worked at the intersection of politics and media for years. In the history of television, what show best depicted the world of politics? What TV show best represents the world of journalism?
A: West Wing, in particular the Presidential campaign of the final season. Not only did it feel as if we were truly along for every strategic moment, the choice was between articulate and principled characters played by Alan Alda and Jimmy Smits. (The cast of the West Wing even visited the convention.) Of course there were plenty of journalistic moments in that series adding to its authenticity, Historically, though, I’d cite the newspaper series Lou Grant (which ended in the early 1980s) for capturing the journalistic purity of pursuing a story. Guess I can’t resist principle and purity.

Q: From giant headphones with massive receivers to button-sized cameras, media technology has changed a lot over the years. What is the coolest device that you’ve seen the media use to cover the Convention?
A: Though tiny cameras are de rigueur now, back in 1996 they were expensive and exotic. So I did a double take the first time I saw ABC’s Sam Donaldson at the podium wearing a piece of equipment on his head that turned out to be a fully functioning, tiny camera. We had gone through intense negotiations with the networks on the numbers and locations of cameras in the hall and I thought … I don’t remember THAT one being on the list. Still, Sam was there, it was the last night … so we made sure the curtain was drawn across the podium entryway so that he wouldn’t catch speakers unaware as they prepared to emerge from backstage. And it was a cool shot.

Q: You’ve lived all over the country for the various Conventions. Which do you prefer: the pizza of New York or the Clam Chowder of Boston? (and you can’t say Chicago’s pizza because you grew up there)
A: I love matchless signature dishes. So, Chowder. And while in Boston I also had Boston Cream Pie at the Parker House where it was invented. As to pizza, I am from Chicago, so there’s no contest.

Q: What is the strangest request you’ve received from a media outlet?
A: Out of the blue at convention week in Los Angeles (2000), one of the networks asked if they could place a huge, inflatable network logo at their outside (trailer) workspace. Of all the things to be thinking about! I guessed that this was a PR department idea being pitched via a reluctant news department, so I listened, considered, and got back to them with a polite No.
Q: White Album or Sgt. Pepper’s?
A: White Album. It’s the longest Beatles album. Great songs by all four to fit any mood. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Helter Skelter,” “Julia.” Even Ringo with his warmly schmaltzy “Goodnight.” But ask me tomorrow and I’ll have a different favorite.

Q: Of the nine Conventions you’ve worked for, is it possible to identify a favorite Convention moment?
A: When the speakers connect with the crowd, it’s magic. President Clinton. Rev. Jackson. I can still picture the face of a young woman during the acceptance speech of Geraldine Ferraro as the vice presidential nominee (1984, San Francisco). I happened to look over and saw a joyful tear in her eye. For her, this was more than a speech, it was a moment of great pride, hope, and excitement. After all the business of the logistics of a convention, what ultimately matters is providing a stage, a platform, an opportunity, that allows people to feel invested and a part of our democratic process. It’s a terrific feeling.

Meet the Staff-Marisa

Marisa McAuliffe works in the Chief of Staff’s office for the Democratic National Convention Committee. Marisa moved to Denver this past summer, but already she has become a vital part of the community.

When Marisa is not at work, there’s a good chance she’s giving back to the Convention host city. In this staff profile, Marisa shows us around the Denver Rescue Mission, where she volunteers her time after work. The DNCC has an internal monthly community service challenge to track hours of service completed by staff — and October was Marisa’s month to shine.

Newsweek has a profile piece on DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry focusing on the roles of religion and politics in her life and her work to date with the Party’s Faith in Action Initiative.

Daughtry is unknown outside Washington, but within the world of Democratic politics, the “black chick from Brooklyn," as she calls herself, is a powerful player. In her job as chief of staff of the Democratic National Committee—No. 2 to Chairman Howard Dean—she runs the party’s day-to-day national strategy. Daughtry is also in charge of planning the Democratic convention next summer in Denver. But as she sees it, that’s nowhere near as daunting a challenge as her efforts to shake Democrats free of their image as a faith-averse party whose candidates care about “values voters" only in an election year. “We’re not talking about changing the party’s platform," she tells NEWSWEEK. "But there’s a way that we can explain ourselves and present ourselves that will resonate better."

DNCC CEO Leah Daughtry is profiled on the Rocky Mountain News website and in Saturday’s print edition.

From the Rocky Mountain News:

[Convention CEO Leah] Daughtry knows there’s a lot to be done. Big numbers are tossed about — 35,000 descending on Denver, an economic impact of about $160 million and thousands of credentialed media putting the city center stage Aug. 25-28.

She said one of her chief worries is something that she never encountered in Los Angeles, Boston or New York when conventions were held there.

It’s the King Soopers anecdote — an incident in Denver when Daughtry said she was trying to buy eggs and was stopped by a woman who began enthusiastically telling her how important the convention was to Denver.

Then there was the LoDo restaurant owner who recognizes her and shouts out that his business is booked for two solid weeks during the convention.

All of this tells Daughtry that Denver will be a different experience than past conventions.

This week, the DNCC launched its new Facebook group, MySpace profile and Twitter account - three new ways for you to interact with the DNCC team.

Facebook-social networking

Facebook is a social networking website where users can interact with their friends, join groups and contribute to causes. We’re really excited about the Facebook group because Democrats from around country now have the opportunity to meet each other, organize events in Denver and all around the U.S. during Convention week (August 25-28, 2008) and Democrats on Facebook can stay in touch post-Convention to work together to elect a Democrat as the next President of the United States.

Those enrolled in the Facebook group can interact with DNCC staff and learn more about the Convention. Come on by the DNCC Facebook group, join up, contribute to the conversation and tell your friends about it.

Meet the Producers - Mark Squier

On Monday, the DNCC announced the expansion of the team that will bring together the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Along with the staff that will consist of hundreds and the volunteer corp made up of thousands, the Executive Producers for the August 25-28, 2008 Convention are Ricky Kirshner and Mark Squier.

Today, we focus on Mark Squier.

Mark has been a media consultant and a strategic advisor for Democratic candidates for 25 years. During that time, Mark has worked on some of the most high profile races around the U.S. Mark has produced ads for over 20 current and former U.S. Senators, Governors and Members of Congress including: Sens. Tom Harkin of Iowa, Daniel Akaka of Hawaii, Bob Graham of Florida and former Governors Ann Richardson Texas and Cecil Andrus of Idaho.

In addition to being one of the most respected consultants in Washington, DC, Mark co-founded the media consulting firm McMahon, Squier, Lapp & Associates (MSLA) in Washington, DC.

With all these qualifications to be the Executive Producer of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, we felt we needed to ask him some tough questions:

Q: Take yourself back to age 5. Where were you likely to be found on a typical Saturday?
A: Eating pancakes - watching Redskins football - playing soccer.

Q: What one person had the greatest influence in setting you on this career path?
A: My Dad – A.K.A. Bob Squier - who is considered one of the founders of political consulting. He was a filmmaker first and came to work in politics in 1968 - electing many Senators, Governors, Congressmen, even working on President Clinton’s re-election in 1996. Out of college I went to work for him and it was awesome. He was very upbeat a lot of fun - and taught me everything.

One of my first memories of being interested in what my father did for a living was when he took me to see Face The Nation on CBS. I was 9 and Dad was working for Hubert Humphrey. I can still remember Vice President Humphrey’s distinctive voice. Boy that really dates me!

Q: When you’re cooking for the kids, what’s on the table?
A: Mac and Cheese - out of the box of course.

Q: What’s one thing every successful candidate has in common?
A: Confidence and comfort with themselves.

Q: Why should America tune in to the 2008 Democratic National Convention?
A: The 2008 convention is the beginning of the fall campaign and it will be an excellent chance to see what the Democratic Party stands for and what it plans to do to get our country back on track. And for people to learn how they can get involved and make a difference. There is too much gripping and not enough action - and that is a direct result of apathy - which I can’t stand. It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and complain - it’s much harder to roll up your sleeves and get involved.

Q: Mountains or monuments?
A: Easy - Mountains - I ski. And Colorado has the best.

Q: Do you ever get tired of red, white and blue?
A: No. If you aren’t a student of this country’s history - and really learn about what symbols like our flag and colors stand for - and the sacrifices that have been made and that are being made to protect and preserve our country - then you shouldn’t work in politics.

I’ve actually worked overseas politically - I’ve seen other systems up
close.

Yes - we do have problems with our system - nothing is perfect.

But it is by far the best one on the planet.

Meet the Producers - Ricky Kirshner

Yesterday, the DNCC announced that Ricky Kirshner and Mark Squier will serve as Executive Producers for the Democratic National Convention in August.

Ricky Kirshner has produced some of the biggest events in TV history including the 2007 Super Bowl halftime show, the Tony awards, GQ Man of the Year awards for NBC, the Rose Parade and of course Ricky was the Executive Producer to every Democratic National Convention since 1996.

We asked Ricky some questions to get his take on some of the most pressing issues of the day. Click here for Mark’s Q&A.

Q: Where did you grow up?
A: South Orange, NJ

Q: What was your first job?
A: Job?? Well, unpaid, I was a Page at the DNCC in 1976 in NYC. Then, an intern at Good Morning America. First job out of college was as a Budget Controller for ABC News 20/20.

Q: You’re a busy New Yorker. What’s the best quick bite in Manhattan?
A: People that work with me would find this one pretty funny. I am very careful about what I eat and eat very plain food. So, I cant give you a great answer like some cart on a street corner or Papaya King. Its usually a turkey sandwich or a salad…sorry, boring answer. I’ll be at Jimmy Johns and Cheesecake Factory a lot in Denver.

Q: What drives you to get out of bed every morning?
A: My son usually jumps on me.

Q: What keeps you coming back to the Democratic Convention?
A: The excitement of doing an event this big and being watched by so many people. It’s what I love about what I do: live TV and live Events. The adrenaline rush of being on and hoping it all works. It is a function of a lot of preparation and working with a lot of great professionals.

Q: You’ve heard a lot of speeches over the years - presumably some better than others. In your opinion, how long is too long?
A: When the orchestra has to play you off, its too long. Elaine Stritch at the Tony Awards (she might still be talking) was too long.

Q: You’re normally a behind-the-scenes guy. If you were to star in a one-man show, what would it be called? And who would you ask to produce it?
A: My wife, Rina, would definitely produce it. She knows me better than anyone, she understands my sense of humor and she knows what I’m really about. But, I must say, it would be pretty boring. When I’m not working I like to be home with my family. Usually wrestling with my son, or talking to my daughters. The soundtrack would be SPRINGSTEEN (told ya I was from Jersey).

The title of my one-man show: IF YOU SEE ME ON TV, SOMETHING WENT WRONG!!

I’m really a guy that likes to be behind the scenes.

DNCC Giving Back

With the Democratic National Convention coming to Denver in just 10 months, the staff here at the DNCC is in full swing giving back to the community. Back in the summer, the staff took a weekend day to help spread mulch around trees in City Park. In September, we took a group of kids from Colorado Uplift to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park just outside Denver for a soccer clinic with some players from Denver’s MLS team the Rapids.

This Wednesday, we headed over to the Edna Oliver Montessori Early Learning Center in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood. The DNCC staff read to the kids, played on the playground with them and a bunch of us cleaned up around the center’s grounds.

Chuck Plunkett of the Denver Post has a blog post about community service event on the Post’s blog Politics West.

Members of the Democratic National Convention Committee continued a stated goal of giving back to the community on Thursday by volunteering to work with young students out cleaning up their school grounds.

The DNCC staffers joined the Edna Oliver Montessori Early Learning Center under stunning blue skies as part of the “DNCC Service Days” volunteerism effort.
